March 14, 2014
St. Paddy's Day is Monday!  St. Paddy's Day is Monday!  One of the funnest days to drink beer of the year is MONDAY!  Parties and corned beef and cabbage and beer! Yay!!

But it is Monday.  How do you feel about it?  Did you take Monday off?  More importantly did you take Tuesday off??  Are you going to party all weekend or just Monday?

Anyway you plan on spending your day or weekend, there will be lots going on. One day of the year.....everyone is Irish.  And of course the drink of the Irish, outside of whiskey, is stout.  And the stout will be flowing. But on this St. Paddy's lets not focus on just stout from Ireland. We have plenty of amazing American stouts that are available...whether it be an oatmeal stout, or a milk stout or a double chocolate stout. And if you really want to get "crazy" how about some imperial stouts or coffee porters?

Whichever way you go, though, just put on your green, drink black beer....and hope you don't wake up with red eyes.

Cheers,

Brown Specialty Division

Left Hand Wake-Up Dead NITRO
Imperial Stout Nitro. Super smooth trifecta of cocoa, dried fruit and licorice notes. Good Morning. You've woken up dead. You're in ruins. But don't be discouraged. Here's a black ale to brighten your day. Wake Up Dead lurks in our cellars for over 4 months before being unleashed. Hints of raisins, black licorice, coffee and dark chocolate are followed by earthy, herbal hop notes. Ommegang Three Philosophers Cellared
Three Philosophers is a unique blend of a Belgian-style dark ale and Liefmans Kriek, an authentic cherry ale from Belgium. Cherry chestnut in color, it's opaque but not cloudy with full carbonation topped by a smooth, tan head. Flavors and aromas of roasted malt, molasses and brown sugar, dark fruits, brandied raisins and chocolate, notable sweetness with low hop bitterness. The mid-palate shows a soft malt center which gives way to a dry, warm, wine-like finish. 9.7% ABV  (Set of 3 - Featuring a bottle from 2011, 2012 and 2013). COMING SOON!
He'brew Funky Jewbelation
A blend of 7 ales, aged in 35% bourbon barrels and 65% rye whiskey barrels. For 2014 Blend - Jewbelation 15, Messiah, Bittersweet Lenny's R.I.P.A., Reunion, Origin, Rejewvenator, & Death of a Contract Brewer. 9.4% ABV
Lazy Magnolia Southern Gentleman
Southern Gentlemen is Lazy Magnolia's award winning Southern Pecan, the original brown ale brewed with roasted pecans, which has been aged in oak bourbon barrels and then cold filtered.  The brewers at Lazy Magnolia have combined the two most southern flavors, pecans and bourbon!  This batch is quite special.  It is the first bourbon barrel aged beer ever to be produced in the State of Mississippi, and supply is limited.  The flavor of the bourbon warms the palate, and the toasted oak barrel enhances the natural vanilla flavors in the beer.  7% ABV
Lazy Magnolia Lazy Saison

Lazy Saison is a cultivated, refreshing Belgian ale, complex in style with a mix of fruity aroma, earthy body, and a hint of spiciness.  As the seasons change, so do our taste buds.  Lazy Saison offers a revitalizing concoction for our rugged fans working in these intense southern heats.  8.9% ABV

Magic Hat Dream Machine
Dream Machine, an India Pale Lager,  is a melding of varied visions of an India Pale Ale and an Amber Lager. Once poured, its light copper color delights the eyes and a citrusy hop aroma flows through the nose. Upon first sip, a smooth hop bitterness reveals itself - fresh, bold and slightly spicy - before subtle hints of mild maltiness appear. A big hop bite and a crisp, clean lager finish combine for a beautifully balanced beer. 5.7% ABV
Coronado/Cigar City Collaboration Jurata Baltic Porter
When naming this Baltic porter, a collaboration with Tampa's famed Cigar City Brewing, we opted for Jurata as a nod to a mythological mermaid known to roam the depths of the Baltic Sea, just as energetic yeast used to brew this deep dark beer navigated our fermentation tanks. Dive in and enjoy Jurata's true-to-style rich and complex flavors! 8% ABV
Innis and Gunn Irish Whiskey Cask
Our sturdy Scottish Stout has been matured over American oak heartwood that has been infused with Irish Whiskey. The result is a rich, complex beer with a velvety smooth finish and notes of dark chocolate, coffee and treacle. 7.4% ABV
Cigar City Hopped on the High Seas Carribbean Style IPA: Kohatu
Brewed and fermented in Puerto Rico, dry-hopped exclusively with Kohatu hops in the shipping container back to Tampa where it was canned at Cigar City Brewing. The voyage truly makes this a Caribbean-style India Pale Ale. Kohatu is more subtle than some if its Kiwi brethren, but offers plenty of tropical fruit flavors with pineapple and lime standing out and less pronounced floral and pine needle aromatics.. 7.0% ABV
Look out for new and returning favorites like Highland Little Hump Spring Ale, Left Hand Good Juju, Cigar City Patio Tools, The Bruery Sour in the Rye, Shipyard Summer Ale.

1 Surprising Trend Giving Craft Beer a Boost
By: Aimee Duffy

Long regarded as a surefire way to ruin the taste of your craft brew, cans are now front and center in the beer world, acting as a surprising force behind the growth of the craft movement. Boston Beer and Craft Brew Alliance are both taking advantage of the trend, rolling out cans for several of their beers over the past few years, while brewers such as Oskar Blues and 21st Amendment don't bother packaging their beer in bottles at all. Today we're taking a closer look at the beer can, exploring why it matters and what it can do for the longevity of the craft beer movement.

Fancy a dip? Punters offered the chance to SWIM in beer A BREWERY in a castle is giving new meaning to the phrase 'in the drink'.

By: Benjamin Russell of Express UK

Punters at Schloss Starkenberger in Austria are being given the chance to bathe in beer in the castle's underground vaults.

Seven 13-foot long pools are open for visitors to immerse themselves in warm beer, which is claimed to have enormous health benefits, including improving circulation.

Deep in the 700-year-old castle's cellar, artist Wernfried Poschusta modified the old fermentation rooms to hold 84,000 litres in the spa-like baths.

And while you can order one of the brewery's ten specialty beers from the bar to enjoy while you relax, you can't drink from the pools.

The experience is part of a guided tour that started in 2005 when the brewery decided to put their abandoned basement to better use.

 Beer Braised Irish Stew

INGREDIENTS:

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 (3 pound) beef chuck roast, trimmed of fat and cut into 1/2-inch cubes
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup coarsely chopped onion
1 cup coarsely chopped carrot
1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle dark beer
2 bay leaves
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

Colcannon:
3 slices bacon
2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
2 cups thinly sliced cabbage
1/4 cup milk, warmed
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).

Heat the vegetable oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat until very hot, and brown the meat in 2 batches, stirring to brown the cubes on all sides. Return all the meat to the Dutch oven, sprinkle with flour, and stir lightly to coat the meat with flour. Stir in onion, carrots, dark beer, bay leaves, thyme, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, garlic, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the mixture to a boil, and cover.
Place the Dutch oven into the preheated oven, and cook for 45 minutes; uncover, stir the stew, and cook until the beef is very tender and the liquid is reduced by half, about 45 more minutes.

Place the bacon in a large, deep skillet, and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain the bacon slices on a paper towel-lined plate. Crumble the bacon and set aside.

About 30 minutes before the stew is ready, make the colcannon: Place the potatoes into a large pot and cover with salted water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain and allow to steam dry for a minute or two.

Place the cabbage into a microwave-safe bowl, and add 1 or 2 tablespoons of water. Cover and microwave on High for about 2 1/2 minutes; uncover (watch out for steam) and stir the cabbage. Cover and microwave for about 2 1/2 more minutes, until the cabbage is slightly tender but not mushy. Drain excess liquid, and set the cabbage aside, covered.

Place the potatoes into a large bowl, and add milk, butter, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper. Beat the potatoes with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Stir in the cabbage, crumbled bacon, and parsley until well combined.

To serve, place a scoop of colcannon onto a plate, make a hollow, and fill with braised beef stew.
