The craft beer business is booming. This headline can be found on almost every newspaper, internet news site, and even on the national and local TV news. It is hard to ignore. 15 years ago hardly a bar owner or bar patron in Florida knew what a craft beer was. Everyone referred to them as "microbrews"...as in "Those microbrews don't sell!" and "That is way too expensive for a beer". It took years and years of introducing the retailers in Florida to these unusual tasting beers that were all the rage in other parts of the U.S. National brands like Dogfish and Stone were on fire in their backyards but here in Florida...they were just a drop in the bucket compared to the large imports and domestic powerhouses. Funny thing...they still are a drop in the bucket compared to these major brands even with all the growth in the craft beer business that we have had for the past 5 years. But you can sense that the tide is turning now.
The biggest and most important part of this change in the near future is going to be the growth and success of all the local Florida breweries that are now operating or are getting ready to open up. If you look at the successful brands that are now national powerhouses, they all started by developing a strong local following in their own backyards. No matter how many states they are selling beer in today, most will tell you that it is their local area that is the most important business to their success. So as we move in to South Florida Beer Week, a beer week where we are focused on our local Florida partners, it is our time to shine a light on what amazing and delicious beers that these breweries are producing. These are the breweries that are going to take craft beer to the next level in Florida for both themselves and the rest of the national brands. And if you have a friend who still thinks of these beers as "microbrews", be sure to invite him or her to one of these events so they can experience what a real fresh craft beer is all about.

Twisted Pine West Bound Braggot
Braggot is a mead-ale hybrid that was popular throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. At Twisted Pine we're not afraid to put our own spin on history, thus we combined a light grain bill with orange blossom honey, pungent Citra hops, Tasmanian pepper berries, and Buddha's Hand, a fragrant citrus fruit, and then fermented this unique ale with a Belgian saison yeast. This beer is so complex yet so drinkable. Limited time only.
8.1% ABV

American Beer Fans, Praise The Heavens: A Trappist Brewery In U.S.
By: Katherine Perry
The town of Spencer, in central Massachusetts, isn't well known for ... well, anything, really. But it's about to become internationally famous - at least in beer-drinking circles.
Spencer is home to St. Joseph's Abbey, where robed monks are busy brewing the first American Trappist beer. If all goes as planned, Spencer Trappist Ale will be available in Massachusetts retail stores by the middle of next week.
The monastery became one of only 10 official Trappist breweries in the world - and the first one outside Europe - in December.

Brewpubs offer great beer, good food and local flavor

By: Gary Stoller
Peter Krein heads to local brewpubs during his free time on business trips, and "there are literally hundreds of places" he can recommend.
Among his favorites are The Church Brew Works in Pittsburgh, Omaha's Upstream Brewing Company and Elevator Brewery and Draught Haus in Columbus, Ohio.
Brewpubs often have "outstanding food, so, when I arrive in a new town, I seek them for food and a great, new beer," says Krein of Carlsbad, Calif., who works in the medical device industry and spent about 175 nights away from home on business trips last year. "Every city has great beer makers, and, if their brewpubs are suitable, I sometimes entertain clients there."
