Football and beer. Those two words almost seem synonymous with each other. Images of wings and pitchers of fizzy yellow liquid seem to pop into my head whenever I think about watching the game. These days however, the craft beer renaissance has brought a more "sophisticated" image to my mind. For instance when I am going to see a great band play, I often find myself craving a delicious craft beer while watching the musicians craft their art on stage. And what bigger connection can be drawn to the brewing of an artisan craft beer than to the art world itself. Whether it be in using funky and atypical ingredients and methods in brewing to the interesting and inventive bottle and six pack label artwork, craft beer has a distinct connection to the creativity and the imagination that exists in the art trade.
And this weekend there is one focus in the art world and it is right here in our backyard of Miami. Art Basel has become a world renowned art show of epic proportions. People from all over the world are descending on the Miami Beach Convention Center, South Beach, Wynwood, the Design District to visit exhibits of world class art being displayed at the show, galleries and tents all across the city. The energy is truly buzzing around this event and art is not only on display but also appearing right before your eyes as graffiti artists paint the walls as you pass by.
We have some great locations to enjoy some world class and great local beer down there as well. Stop by the Basel Biergarten to get a cross section of craft beer from around the state from local standards like Native Lager and Monk in the Trunk to new up and coming breweries like Funky Buddha and Cigar City and some from breweries that have rarely been in South Florida before like 7venth Sun and Engine 15. Or if you really want to see a brewery that has tied themselves to the art world and the art of making beer stop by the Duvel Beer House where there will be a full display of great art and great beer to be enjoyed. Should be an exciting weekend down in Miami...hope to bump into a few of you!

Dogfish Head Piercing Pils
A Perry-Pils hybrid, Piercing Pils is a Czech Style Pilsner brewed with a White Pear Tea and Pear juice. Both the juice and the tea were added in the kettle during the whirlpool (after the boil) for maximum flavor and aroma contribution. The Pear fruit complexity pierces right through the spicy Czech Saaz hops beautifully, adding a gentle acidity to this pale lager that makes for a crisp refreshing sipper. Amarillo hops add nuanced citrus notes that meld perfectly with the fruit. 6.0% ABV

The base of Kvasir is a toasty red winter wheat, and the bog-grown berries deliver a pungent tartness. While a handful of hops is used, the earthy, bitter counterpunch to the sweet honey and birch syrup comes from the herbs. 10.0% ABV

The Bruery 6 Geese Laying
6 Geese-A-Laying is the 6th beer in our "12 Days of Christmas" series and is a return to the more classic dark and toasty winter ale, following the appropriately blonde 5 Golden Rings. Brewed with cape gooseberries, this malty ale displays notes of plums, dark cherry and bright, citrus-like flavors from the namesake berries. Delicious right now, but suitable for aging up to 6 years, upon the release of 12 Drummers Drumming. 11.5% ABV

Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence
The aroma immediately speaks of dark chocolate and dark malts. The taste continues with the intense Belgian dark chocolate gliding across the tongue; starting sweet up front but giving way to rich cocoa flavors at the back. Through it all, a subtle fruitiness from our special Belgian yeast gives the beer brightness otherwise foreign to a beer style normally associated with gray foggy skies. Lingering chocolate entices the drinker to taste more. Go ahead. Dessert is good for the soul. 7.0% ABV

Limited release of the Backstage Series. Our brewing team painstakingly choreographed each layer of this beer's characteristics, starting with a healthy wheat and roasted malt base and adding clean, fragrant hops. It's one-hundred percent barrel aged in maple syrup bourbon barrels and bourbon barrels over the course of sixteen months, then blended using carefully calculated ratios for the ultimate final product. Take your time allowing the layers of flavors to unfold...Because it'll only get better. 12.6% ABV

It began with a simple question: what if boilermakers actually tasted good? As always, we were unafraid and stepped up to the challenge with the grit of a champion prize fighter. The solution: age our TOTALLY-high-in-Vitamin-Yum Solid Gold in the finest barrels we had. The result: a delicious corn-based beer that, thanks to its low original ABV and unassuming flavor profile, acted as a 'yum-sponge' grabbing everything available from barrel aging. Oak-y, bourbon-y and corn-y, this lil' sucker retains its original crushability while adding the complex flavors of barrel aging. Awesome. Get ready for the future of barrel aged beers... 7.9% ABV

Left Hand Fade to Black, Volume 5
This Rye Ale boasts a deep dark brown body with an off white head. This dark brew envelopes your nose with aromas of dark coffee, maple wood and hints of dark agave nectar. The flavor is an intense evolution that starts off with nut bread flowing into molasses followed by a taste of licorice. This lands on spicy rye notes all before being washed away by earthy hop, leaving behind a slight black pepper sensation. 7.8% ABV

Look Out! There's a Craft-Beer Revolution Taking Over France

By: Jeff Campagna
It's almost 8 p.m. I am waiting at the Chateau Rouge metro station deep in Paris's 18th arrondissement for Phillip, an American expat and craft-beer aficionado. The neighborhood is called Goutte d'Or, which translates to "drop of gold," and it isn't exactly the Paris you see in postcards. Its residents are mainly North and sub-Saharan African. People scurry past me while eating freshly roasted corn on the cob. It's noisy, crowded, and alive. While I wait, three armed gendarmerie officers bound up the stairs from the metro and converge on a hooded man selling things on the corner of the street. Shortly after, Phillip arrives.
