Thanksgiving Traditions

We have a lot to be thankful for this year.

I am thankful for the Shmaltz Brewing He'brew Jewbilation 17 that came out to drink in time for the first day of Chanukah, and to have friends and family smile at the humorous expressions on the bottle. "A beer with real shtick!"

I am thankful for Founders All Day IPA to help me get through the entirety of Thanksgiving day, along with the many loud clanks in the kitchen and shouts at the football games.

I am thankful for Samuel Smith's Organic Chocolate Stout to give samples around the table dinner and watch their expressions as they say, "Oooh, this tastes just like chocolate!" and then declaring, "AND it's organic?"

I am thankful for my friends who share one of their highly prized beer bottles (come on Cigar City Hunahpu...) with me and vice versa at my "Friendsgiving" meal the Sunday following Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Brown Distributing. We hope you enjoy your delicious turkey and craft beers with your loved ones.

Cheers,

Brown Specialty Team

Boulder Shake Chocolate Porter
A twist on the traditional robust American Porter, Shake Chocolate Porter is black in color with rich, dark chocolate aromatics and flavors and subtle coffee-like notes.  This unique brew blends five different grains, including Chocolate Wheat, that along with cacao nibs create a devilishly delicious chocolate finish with a velvety mouthfeel. 5.9% ABV
Breckenridge Nitro Vanilla Porter
Silky, Smooth, & Sessionable. Our remarkably complex, wildly popular ale combines hints of chocolate, caramel, and coffee with an inventively delicious twist, for good measure. A vortex of flavors made even more alluring by a blast of nitrogen. 4.7% ABV
Left Hand Fade to Black Volume 5
This Rye Ale boasts a deep dark brown body with an off white head. This dark brew envelopes your nose with aromas of dark coffee, maple wood and hints of dark agave nectar. The flavor is an intense evolution that starts off with nut bread flowing into molasses followed by a taste of licorice. This lands on spicy rye notes all before being washed away by earthy hop, leaving behind a slight black pepper sensation. 7.8% ABV
Rekorderlig Strawberry-Lime Cider
Rekorderlig Strawberry-Lime Cider was the first to explore this unique flavour combination. Serve over ice with fresh mint leaves or strawberries and a wedge of lime for a fresh, zesty experience. 4.5% ABV
Rekorderlig Wild Berries Cider

Bursting with the freshest fruit flavors Rekorderlig Wild Berries Cider is best served over ice for a juicy experience. For the ultimate experience add fresh blueberries and raspberries.

4.5% ABV
Rekorderlig Pear Cider
Made from the purest Swedish spring water, Rekorderlig Pear Cider is best served over ice with a wedge of zesty lemon and orange for a distinctively crisp experience. 4.5% ABV
B. Nektar Dwarf Invasion
The mead is inspired by a cherry lambic. We use Michigan wildflower honey as the base for this mead, and add tart Michigan Balaton cherry juice and then dry hop it with Styrian Golding hops. The taste is sweet, tart, acidic, with a mild bitterness from the hops. The aroma is pure heaven. 6.0% ABV
Green's Gluten Free Enterprise Dry-hopped Lager

Made from gluten-free ingredients - millet, sorghum, rice, buckwheat, hops, water, and yeast (with no wheat or barley) - it is dry-hopped with West Coast USA hops for an appealing floral finish. It is golden pale in color, the nose is a mix of citrus-floral aroma sensations, clean with a light malt taste, but with an herbal, hoppy aftertaste. Body and mouthfeel are light and refreshing. 4.1% ABV

Innis and Gunn Scottish Porter

This comforting Porter is the winter warmer in our seasonal range. We delved into the history books to conceive this recipe. As well as the flavor packed crystal wheat and roasted malt, we also added treacle to the brew which gives it a lingering, bitter-sweet star anise character. 7.4% ABV

Peak Maple Collaboration

Peak Maple Collaboration is a truly local project. It's a new twist on our previously brewed Maple Oat Ale. We worked with local farmers and small businesses to craft this beer with Maine-grown organic oats from GrandyOats and Vermont-produced organic maple syrup from Butternut Mountain Farms. The Maple Collaboration is a copper-colored brew with a dynamic mouth feel from the organic oats and a subtle richness in the finish from the organic maple syrup. The beer is in support of Chefs Collaborative, the nation's leading environmentally conscious culinary organization. 6.7% ABV

Red Brick Vanilla Gorilla

Vanilla Gorilla, Brick Mason Series #8, has developed a cult following over the years. The original recipe was simply our Red Brick Porter with Madagascar Vanilla beans added. Over the years we've brewed different variations including the use of cherry wood smoked malt, aging in Jack Daniels barrels, peated malt and even smoking the vanilla beans at Fox Bros., a local BBQ joint. One thing you can always count on with our Vanilla Gorilla is a delicious vanilla porter with a creative twist. 7.5% ABV

Summit Unchained 14: Biere de Garde
For Unchained 14, Summit brewer Jeff Williamson brings you Bière de Garde - a classic French farmhouse style ale that is rarely seen fresh locally. Using the best French and Belgian malts, Jeff's brew entices you with a malt aroma of toffee, cherry and other goodies. The malt theme carries through to the taste, offering up more toffee, cherry, figs, caramel, and a hint of biscuit. A subtle hop spiciness plays amongst the flavors and it finishes crisp and dry. This hearty ale pairs well with bon fires, roasted meats and good friends. 7.3% ABV
Look out for new and returning favorites like Bell's Christmas Ale, Bell's Winter White Ale, Boulder Never Summer Ale, Breckenridge Christmas Ale, Highland Thunderstruck Coffee Porter, Highland Cold Mountain Winter Ale, Hoppin' Frog Frosted Frog Christmas Ale, and Summit Winter Ale.

BEER NEWS
Dissecting Walmart's Ability to Sell Craft Beer
By: Chris Furnari

Walmart, the largest retailer in the world, has said it wants to double its alcohol sales by 2016.

One area of the store Walmart would like to see customers spending more time is the beer aisle. The company is hoping it can grab a significant chunk of the off-premise U.S. beer market, which IRI - a Chicago-based market research firm - pegs at $29.7 billion dollars for the 52-week period ending Nov. 3.

To prove its commitment to category, Walmart has added 100,000 sq. ft. of refrigerated space across its 3,500 locations that sell alcohol in the last 18 months.

While much of that space will likely be dedicated to selling larger domestic brands from Anheuser-Busch InBev and MillerCoors, as well as major imports from Heineken and Crown, Walmart does want to improve the selection in its craft sets.

"We tailor our assortment to each store individually," said Danit Marquardt, the director of corporate communications for the company. "We want to make sure we offer the right brands for our customers in each market we serve."

IPA Nation: How this ale became craft beer's most popular style
By: Tom Rotunno

In the red hot world of craft beer, one style of beer is hotter than all the rest-the India Pale Ale.

The style, which is known for its strong hop character, dates to the 1800s and its popularity has seen peaks and valleys before. But the modern day IPA is currently the king of craft beer. It is the fastest-growing and best-selling style of craft beer by nearly any metric.

According to market research group IRI, which tracks off-premise beer sales, IPA sales were up 36 percent in the first half of 2013.

Another market research firm, GuestMetrics, which measures on-premise sales, said the IPA style was the fastest-growing beer category in 2012, posting unit growth of 39 percent.

Then there is the Great American Beer Festival, the world's largest beer competition. Since 2001, the most-entered category has been the American-Style IPA, which saw 252 entries in 2013.

But while IPA may reign supreme today, it wasn't always the case.

Woody Harrelson co-owns the world's first organic vegan beer garden
By: Curt Hopkins

Actor celebrated the opening of his 'Sage Plant Based Bistro and Beer Garden' in Culver City early last month.

Woody Harrelson, already co-owner of a Canadian tree-free paper company, is expanding his green business empire, with the opening of Sage - the world's first organic vegan beer garden.

The Culver City location, which debuted last month to rave reviews, expands on the original Sage Vegan Bistro located in Echo Park and started by Harrelson's close friend Chef Mollie Engelhart.

"I loved the concept of an organic beer garden, but I didn't invest in the concept, I really invested in Mollie," Harrelson told HuffPo. "She's amazing. All that you see, hear and taste has everything to do with her and nothing to do with me. I just believed in her, put money in. A lot of people think, 'vegan?' but they don't realize this is the ultimate comfort food."

Sage's menu includes such mouth-watering options such as the Jamaican Jerk Burger, Raw Tacos, Goatless Greek Quinoa Kale Salad, vegan pizzas, and a very large selection of organic, vegan-friendly beer.
