Treat wins every time

Halloween for kids means pumpkins and candy. Halloween for adults means pumpkin beers and chocolate porters and stouts. I'd say that's a pretty fair trade. Take the opportunity to delve into that warming porter while the weather stays a little cooler now. Chocolately malts, roasted nuttiness, 8.0% ABV...yum. Don't forget the floats - pumpkin floats with pumpkin beer and vanilla ice cream or chocolate stout floats with coffee ice cream.  If you're looking for a little less sweet, and a little more scary--grab a six pack of Red Brick Laughing Skull.  It's a great beer to bring to a Halloween Party.

Cheers,

BEER NEWS
Country brewers are star players in GABF's successful run
By: Tom Wilmes

DENVER -- Now that the beer has stopped flowing, the pretzel necklaces have been consumed and the medals handed out at the 32nd annual Great American Beer Festival, held over three days last week at the Colorado Convention Center, it's time to sit back, crack open a locally brewed craft beer and reflect on the action.

Rather than write a compile best-of list -- although there were more excellent and inventive beers pouring at the festival this year than ever before -- I wanted to focus on a couple of questions I heard repeatedly during the event.

Has the festival become too big for its own good?

We know the numbers: 624 breweries pouring a cumulative 48,000 gallons of beer for 49,000 total attendees.

Tickets sold out in a record 20 minutes this year and, according to the nonprofit Brewers Association, which produces the festival, sales were pretty much evenly split between Colorado residents and folks traveling from points elsewhere, both nationally and internationally.

Man Drops 14 Pounds by Only Drinking Beer and Eating Sausages
By: Charisma Madarang

Inspired by Oktoberfest's boozy shindigs, Arizona resident Evo Terra managed to shed 14 pounds last year by living off a diet of beer and sausages. Terra began the dream peculiar diet three years ago, which consists of two sausages and up to six beers a day - about 15,000 calories per week.

"Most of it was body fat," says Terry Simpson, Terra's doctor. "His cholesterol went down by a third." Simpson monitors Terra's health and assures non-believers that if the diet ever proved harmful, it would be "shut down."

Of course, this isn't magic. It's just simple numbers. As Terra points out, if his body burns 2100 calories on a daily basis and he only consumes 1500 calories that day, he'll be burning more calories than he consumes - regardless of the source of those calories.

Of course, "variety" is key here and Terra chows down on everything from breakfast sausages to polish dogs and sips on fruit beers in the morning, kicking back with an imperial stouts around dinner time. The one con to this Oktoberfest regimen is that Terra isn't fit to drive due to his diet's food-to-booze ratio. Luckily, his son has volunteered to be the designated driver for the month of October.

Boulevard Crafts a Strategy to Keep Its Cred in Duvel Deal
By: Venessa Wong

When Boulevard Brewing announced last week that it would be acquired by Belgian beermaker Duvel Moortgat, craft beer drinkers immediately questioned what it would mean about the future of the small Kansas City brewer.

Craft beer enthusiasts can be sensitive to anything that might upset the delicate fermentation of their favorite brews, but the companies are trying to reassure them about this deal:

Duvel is a respected brand. The namesake beer has a 95 rating on beeradvocate.com, and it's not that big a company anyhow. The brewer, Belgium's second-largest, will sell nearly 767,000 barrels this year, according to Brewbound.com. Yes, that's far more than the nearly 174,000 barrels Boulevard sold in 2012, but this is a totally different scale compared with a brewer such as ABInbev (BUD), which shipped more than 343 million barrels last year.

No employees will lose their jobs in the merger. Who can complain about that? "The brewery itself here in Kansas City will in the future be the center of operations for the combined entity of Duvel Moortgat, Brewery Ommegang, and Boulevard Brewing Co. here in the United States," Duvel Moortgat Chief Executive Michel Moortgat told the Kansas City Business Journal.

Beer and Gouda Fried Risotto Balls (Arancini)

By: KQED's Bay Area Bites

The great thing about these risotto balls (called arancini) is that they not only make a great starter, but you can put them on a salad or have them as a side. Super versatile!

And the fact that they are made with beer and cheese doesn't hurt either.

Ingredients

- Scant 1 1/4 cup arborio rice

- 3 cups Founders Dirty Bastard or another Scotch Ale style

- 1 1/2 cup vegetable broth

- 1 cup Parmesan cheese, shredded

- 1/4 cup sweet onion, minced

- 3 garlic cloves, minced

- 2 tablespoons olive oil

- 2 teaspoons of salt

- 12 1/4-inch cubes of Gouda cheese

- 2 eggs

- 1/3 cup of flour

- 1/2 cup bread crumbs

- Vegetable oil

- Marinara sauce for dipping

Instructions

1. In a very large pan, heat the olive oil over a medium-low heat until the oil's surface shimmers.

2. Add the garlic and onion. Cook until they are just aromatic, about a minute or two.

3. Add in the rice and mix it well so that it is lightly covered in oil. Warm the rice for a couple of minutes. Do not allow it to brown.

4. Add the vegetable broth to the rice and about 1/2 cup of the Dirty Bastard beer, and bring it to a boil.

5. Add in the salt, reduce to a low simmer, cooking the liquid down.

6. When the liquid has almost cooked down, add in another 1/2 cup or so of the beer. Repeating until all of the liquid is used up and the rice is fully cooked.

7. Fold in the Parmesan cheese.

8. Let the risotto cool then place it in the refrigerator for at least an hour.

9. In one mixing bowl, beat the two eggs and whisk in the flour. In a separate bowl, add the bread crumbs. Also line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

10. Remove the risotto from the fridge and let's make some balls! Place a small spoonful in the palm of your hand and using your finger, make an indentation. Place a cube of Gouda cheese in the pocket and roll the risotto into a ball, adding more if needed. You want to make sure the Gouda is completely surrounded by risotto. Then place it on the parchment paper.

11. After all twelve are made, put the baking sheet in the fridge and let it chill for about an hour.

12. Remove the tray from the fridge and then one at a time, dip the balls in the egg and flour mixture, removing any excess. Then roll them in the bread crumbs, placing them back on the parchment paper and placing it back in the fridge when done.

13. Bring vegetable oil to 375 degrees F and carefully fry the balls until golden brown, placing them on a drying rack when done.

Serve with marinara sauce and enjoy!
