Pumpkin Beer All Day, Every Day
We often go crazy over pumpkin flavored everything this time of year. Can you blame us? October 1st and pumpkins are one of the few things in Florida that makes us feel like we actually have weather-changing seasons. The one day the temperature suddenly drops 10 degrees (only from 80° to 70° F) and we get all giddy, order our Starbucks pumpkin spice latte, pick up a pack of pumpkin beer, make pumpkin muffins, buy pumpkins to carve, light up our pumpkin candles, buy more pumpkin beer because we want to try ALL of them...well, you get the idea. Back in colonial times, before good barley was accessible, brewers used fruits and vegetables like corn, pumpkin, and squash since it was easily available. Back then they actually replaced the malt completed with a pumpkin. Nowadays, craft breweries use the gourd to add to the malts to come up with creative ways to highlight the pumpkin superstar in a more savory treat; things like clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice or vanilla and molasses are just some of the flavoring agents used. The style can vary from an ale, to a lager, or to an imperial higher alcohol ale. Truth is, if you like pumpkin, you'll enjoy all of these varieties of pumpkin beer, and they'll be sure to get you in the fall spirit.
Cheers,
Brown Specialty Team

Red Brick A-Town Brown
Red Brick Brewing is Atlanta's oldest craft brewery, with their Brown Ale being the first beer produced back in 1993. Now, Red Brick has renamed their brown ale to A-Town Brown, with a label that depicts some iconic Atlanta buildings and things like MARTA the mass transit train, the capitol building, the Hyatt Hotel, Hank Aaron's 715, etc. The beer itself was inspired by the malty brews of England, but with an American sized attitude. It's surprisingly light bodied, which plays well with the sweet caramel, fresh pecan, and bread notes you discover on each sip. Brown Ale is a great beer to enjoy outdoors on a clear autumn afternoon. 6.25% ABV

Why a sixth-grader wants to brew beer in space (+video)
By: Jaspar Hamilla
Mankind may be one step closer to getting extraterrestrial breweries - thanks to an eleven-year-old.
Michal Bodzianowski, 11, is among the winners of the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education's Student Spaceflight Experiments Program, which sends student experiments to the International Space Station. His project, "What Are the Effects of Creation of Beer in Microgravity and Is It Possible?," will be ferried upward this November as part of the program's "Mission 4."
Bodzianowski, a sixth-grader at the SETEM School and Academy in Colorado's Douglas County School District, says he wants to find out if it's possible to brew beer in space, mixing crushed malted barley, bottled water, and yeast. It's an idea that he says could help in developing backup water supplies for future extraterrestrial colonies, since alcohol is lethal to bacteria.
Indeed, for Bodzianowski, putting microbreweries in space has little to do with furnishing Martian taps. Instead, beer could be a safe drinking water substitute in the event of an off-world disaster that contaminates the brought-along water supplies, says Bodzianowski. That's because the fermentation process kills off water contaminants.

Georgia Florida Rivalry Gets a Beer Too
By: Beer Street Journal
More SEC Football rivalry. Terrapin Beer Company's "Spike" is in Florida today brewing a beer with Swamp Head (Gainesville) on a new collaboration called Bitter Rivalry. If you know nothing of the rivalry that is the Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs, it's... huge.
The two teams can't play at their own stadiums. They have to play on neutral ground in Jacksonville, Florida. "The Landing" in Jacksonville becomes the worlds largest outdoor cocktail party in America. Trust me, I've been.
The rivalry heats up today with this new collaboration. Swamp Head is teasing details, but haven't commented on the style. There are oranges involved, we know this much.
The Georgia/Florida game this year is November 2. There will be release parties and activities around this beer closer to the bloodbath. Oh, and by the way this isn't Spike's first SEC rivalry brew this year. In August he went to Knoxville, Tennessee (that's UT territory) to brew another rivalry brew.

This craft beer is for you, bud
By : Alan Snel
When it comes to beers in National Hockey League arenas across Canada, the big guys are Molson Coors Brewing and Labatt Brewing Co.
But craft beers are slowly muscling their way into NHL arenas and other major-league sports venues as stadiums understand that the microbrew companies are offering a tasty, diversified product that fans desire.
Bear witness to a small microbrewery two hours north of Toronto called Lake of the Bays, which unveiled a new lager called Top Shelf at the annual National Beer Wholesalers Association trade show in Las Vegas this week.
The lager, named for the top section of the net where goals are scored, will be poured at NHL arenas in Canada and Lake of the Bays also signed a deal to become the official brewery of the NHL Alumni Association.
"Having a hockey-related beer gets you into the sports bars and sports-oriented retailer purchasers," said Ian Smith, who enjoys the enviable job title of chief beer taster of Lake of the Bays Brewing.

Add the brats, and cook until plump, about 6 minutes. Preheat the grill. Lightly brush the sausages with oil. Place on the grill, and cook for a few minutes on each side. Remove the sausages from the grill, and serve with potato salad, rolls and mustard. Potato Salad: Place the potatoes in a second saucepan, and cover them with salted water by 2 inches. Place the saucepan over medium heat, and simmer the potatoes until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain well, and return to the saucepan to keep warm. In the meantime, grab a skillet and cook the bacon until crispy over medium heat. Add the onions, and season with pepper. Sauté for 1 minute. Remove from the heat. Set aside. Transfer the potatoes and the bacon mixture (including the fat) to a large mixing bowl. Add vinegar (to taste), mustard, eggs and green onions. Season with salt and pepper. Mix well.
