September 27, 2013

The season of darker, more full flavored beers is upon us. Right now on the shelves you can find any number of amber, toasty, roasty and richer Pumpkin ales and Oktoberfests like Shipyard Pumpkinhead, Southern Tier Pumking, Dogfish Head Punkin, Ayinger Oktoberfest Marzen, Blue Point Oktoberfest, and Left Hand Oktoberfest. As we pray for cooler weather, these beers pair perfectly with fall weather and football. We ever so quickly shift from the light, refreshing beers of summer to the more full flavored spectrum of beer.

As the weather gets cooler, the beers get darker too. Stout Season is upon us. All of the depths of rich, chocolatey and dark beers are coming and we couldn't be more excited for all of these fall and winter brews. There is something about looking down at pint full of black beer that just makes me happy. Before you know it, shelves will be full of these black beauties. (Side note: while we have both beers on the shelves, ever mixed a Stout and Pumpkin Beer? It's worth a try!)

We hope you're ready because we are kicking off stout season right with the launch of Founders Breakfast Stout on Founders Friday, 10/4/2013. Join establishments around the state as we celebrate the beginning of Stout Season, Breakfast Stout and all things Founders Brewing Co. You could even win a trip to Founders Brewing Co. for their 2014 Founders Fest. Get all of the details at FoundersFriday.com.

Whether it's a rich amber, black, brown or any other dark shade, enjoy these beers while they are available and celebrate their arrival! We know we will.

Cheers,

Ian Salzberg

Take the Black Stout

Take the Black Stout is brewed with a robust amount of specialty malt, chocolate malt, Midnight Wheat and roasted barley. Balanced hopping includes Northern Brewer and Columbus; spiced with licorice root and star anise. It has a deep black, almost opaque, hue with a full tan head. Deep aromas of dark chocolate, caramel malt and earthy hops, with light roastiness and a touch of fruitiness. Clean hop bitterness joins with a slight woody character and spiciness. The finish offers a rich malt sweetness giving way to spicy earthiness. 7.0% ABV

DirtWolf Double IPA

Wildly assertive, intentionally untamed and dangerously satisfying, DirtWolf Double IPA is the culmination of Victory's double IPA series experiment with whole flower American-grown hops. With two-row German malts and a well-balanced combination of whole flower Citra, Chinook, Simcoe and Mosaic hops, this 8.7% abv brew blends the powerful citrus aroma and fruity flavors, with the piney, earthy and mildly floral characteristics found in these intriguing hop varieties. 8.7% ABV (Available on September 30th, 2013)

Victory Red Thunder

The luscious result of aging Baltic Thunder Porter in once-used wine barrels, Red Thunder exudes an inviting cocoa nose that segues into tempered pit-fruit sweetness on the tongue.  Subtle and seductive, the burnished cocoa creaminess of our Baltic Thunder Porter has been accented with the tannic dryness that the wood imparts. 8.5% ABV

PALM Royale

PALM Royale is a Belgian Strong Ale. It is a fine copper colored beer, topped with a rich, white head. With its distinctive banana aroma, mild caramel honey mellowness and contrasting bitter & fruity notes, PALM Royale delivers wonderful flavor, bite & a great deal of body. 7.5% ABV

Terrapin Dr. Krunkles

Dr. Krunkles White Farmhouse IPA reaches new heights in complexity and flavor by combining the malt and spices of a Belgian Witbier, the yeast of a Farmhouse Ale, and the hoppy goodness of an American IPA. Dr. Krunkle's twisted touch is a dash of white peppercorn followed by wood aging on white ash wood. 7.3% ABV

Terrapin Reunion Ale '13

Reunion Ale '13 is a dark ale brewed with vanilla, cinnamon, coffee and cocoa nibs from Nashville, Tennessee's Olive and Sinclair Chocolate Company. The Brown ale leads with a bold coffee  and subtle cinnamon aroma. Complex malt overtones quickly give way to a chocolate, coffee and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss. 7.5% ABV

Auto-Brewery Syndrome: Apparently, You Can Make Beer In Your Gut
By: Michaeleen DouclefF

This medical case may give a whole new meaning to the phrase "beer gut." A 61-year-old man - with a history of home-brewing - stumbled into a Texas emergency room complaining of dizziness. Nurses ran a Breathalyzer test. And sure enough, the man's blood alcohol concentration was a whopping 0.37 percent, or almost five times the legal limit for driving in Texas.

There was just one hitch: The man said that he hadn't touched a drop of alcohol that day.
