Craft Beer for all times of the day

The past couple of football games I have been to, I have seen a lot of mixed variety at the good ol' tailgate. Gone are the days of only seeing those old familiar cans in the cooler at the pool, beach, concert, or football game. We are seeing cans of Cigar City Florida Cracker, Shipyard Pumpkinhead, session IPAs (Founders All-Day IPA, baby), and the likes. Now there are more choices than ever, and we are happy to drink a variety during a long day of football.

Some tailgates start as early as 8:00am, and we are definitely enjoying Stiegl Grapefruit Radlers to start our day. After all, it's like the breakfast juice beer. Another great breakfast beer? ...Founders Breakfast Stout of course--the double chocolate coffee oatmeal stout. There's a kid on the front of the bottle thoroughly enjoying eating his cereal, so think of this beer as the adult you on the front now drinking coffee beer for breakfast.

I know what you're thinking...that Breakfast Stout isn't in Florida yet...but it will be very soon on Founders Friday, 10/4/13.  Founders Friday is the Florida statewide release of Founders Breakfast Stout and celebration of all Founders Brewing Co. beers. Check it out, it's legit. www.foundersfriday.com

Cheers,

Red Brick A-Town Brown
Red Brick Brewing is Atlanta's oldest craft brewery, with their Brown Ale being the first beer produced back in 1993. Now, Red Brick has renamed their brown ale to A-Town Brown, with a label that depicts some iconic Atlanta buildings and things like MARTA the mass transit train, the capitol building, the Hyatt Hotel, Hank Aaron's 715, etc. The beer itself was inspired by the malty brews of England, but with an American sized attitude. It's surprisingly light bodied, which plays well with the sweet caramel, fresh pecan, and bread notes you discover on each sip. Brown Ale is a great beer to enjoy outdoors on a clear autumn afternoon. 6.25% ABV
Three Palms Mole Hill
A brown session saison with some barnyard funk, a light body, notes of chocolate and a dry finish 3.8% ABV
Ommegang Games of Thrones: Take the Black Stout
Take the Black Stout is brewed with a robust amount of specialty malt, chocolate malt, Midnight Wheat and roasted barley. Balanced hopping includes Northern Brewer and Columbus; spiced with licorice root and star anise. It has a deep black, almost opaque, hue with a full tan head. Deep aromas of dark chocolate, caramel malt and earthy hops, with light roastiness and a touch of fruitiness. Clean hop bitterness joins with a slight woody character and spiciness. The finish offers a rich malt sweetness giving way to spicy earthiness. 7.0% ABV

Rogue Beard Beer
It's here! The latest brew Dedicated to Beards, Beard Beer is brewed with a yeast created from Brewmaster John Maier's Beard. No Need to freak out, Brewers have used wild yeasts in beer making for centuries. John has had the same Old Growth Beard since 1983 and for over 15,000 brews, so it is no great surprise that a natural yeast ideal for brewing was discovered in his beard. 5.6% ABV
Shmaltz and Terrapin Collaboration: Reunion Ale '13
Brewed for Terrapin's dear friend, Virginia MacLean, a woman who died of Myeloma in 2007. All proceeds to this annual collaobration go to the institute of Myeloma and Bone Cancer Research (imbcr.org). This year's beer is a dark ale brewed with cinnamon with vanilla, coffee, and cocoa nibs added. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that they used to share with Virginia at their favorite restaurant. The brown ale leads with a bold coffee and subtle cinnamon aroma. Complex malt overtones quickly give way to a chocolate, coffee, and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss.
Look out for new and returning favorites like Avery Old Jubilation, Breckenridge Autumn Ale, Stoudt's Oktoberfest, Left Hand Oktoberfest, Rogue Chatoe Pumpkin Patch, Summit Saga IPA, and select items from Evil Twin Brewing and Stillwater.

Scotland's 'Brew Dogs' Hop Across America on a Craft Beer Tour
By: Clark Boyd

The barkeep always asks a simple question: "What'll it be?"

For a long time, the answer here in the US, for beer drinkers anyway, was pretty simple too. It was usually something like, "I'll have any one of a number of generic, fizzy lagers that taste slightly more hoppy than 7-Up."

But the craft beer movement has changed all that in recent years; it's also inspired brewers around the world to also push the envelope. Nobody's pushed that envelope quite so much, though, as Scotland's "Brew Dogs," aka Martin Dickie and James Watt.

Back in 2007, Watt and Dickie had just about had enough. They'd tired of their day jobs in their native Aberdeen, Scotland. And don't even get them started on the beer.

"We couldn't find any beers that we wanted to drink in Scotland," says Watt. "So we quit our day jobs, got some bank loans, and massively inspired by the American craft beer revolution, we started brewing our own beers in the northeast of Scotland."

And thus "Brew Dogs" was born.

Louisiana debuts a craft beer trail
By: Marcy Franklin, USA Today

There's never been a better time to be a craft beer lover in Louisiana. Sure, the state is best known for Creole, boudin and Cajun spices, but nowadays another local staple is finally getting its due credit: beer.

Just in time for the first-ever Louisiana Craft Beer Week that began Monday September 23, Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne unveiled the Louisiana Brewery Trail, highlighting each of the state's seven craft breweries: Abita, Bayou Teche, Chafunkta, Covington, NOLA, Parish and Tin Roof.

The website, a collaboration between the Louisiana Travel website and the Louisiana Craft Brewers Guild, has everything you need to know to hit the brewery trail: history of the breweries, tour information and even nearby restaurants and must-see tourist spots from the North Shore all the way to Baton Rouge and New Orleans

Auto-Brewery Syndrome: Apparently, you can make beer in your gut.
By: Michaeleen Doucleff

This medical case may give a whole new meaning to the phrase "beer gut."

A 61-year-old man - with a history of home-brewing - stumbled into a Texas emergency room complaining of dizziness. Nurses ran a Breathalyzer test. And sure enough, the man's blood alcohol concentration was a whopping 0.37 percent, or almost five times the legal limit for driving in Texas.

There was just one hitch: The man said that he hadn't touched a drop of alcohol that day. "He would get drunk out of the blue - on a Sunday morning after being at church, or really, just anytime," says , the dean of nursing at Panola College in Carthage, Texas. "His wife was so dismayed about it that she even bought a Breathalyzer."

Other medical professionals chalked up the man's problem to "closet drinking." But Cordell and Dr. Justin McCarthy, a gastroenterologist in Lubbock, wanted to figure out what was really going on.

So the team searched the man's belongings for liquor and then isolated him in a hospital room for 24 hours. Throughout the day, he ate carbohydrate-rich foods, and the doctors periodically checked his blood for alcohol. At one point, it rose 0.12 percent.
