We have American Craft Beer Week, South Florida Beer Week, Tampa Bay Beer Week, Jacksonville Beer Week and after being down in Key West for the beer festival on Labor Day, I am sure we are headed to Key West Beer Week soon too. Beer weeks are fun and give the whole community an opportunity to experience different beers, beer pairings, unique products from National and Local Breweries and on and on... but this upcoming week is different from all other "Beer Weeks". It is Gnome Week! Gnomes are mystical creatures that date back hundreds of years in lore... What do they possibly have to do with beer? Brasserie d'Achouffe was founded in the 1970s by Christian Bauweraerts and Pierre Gobron in the quaint village of Achouffe, Belgium. Belgium, being long known for the quality of its unique style of beer, hadn't seen a new brewery open in ages much less one that could produce the quality of the beer that the Brasserie does. The legend goes that there was a colony of gnomes who once brewed enough beer to keep the entire nation of Belgium drunk year 'round. The beer flowed from a spring in the woods that was once the secret meeting place of the Knights of Templar and also became known as the Valley of the Fairies. Years later the area was devastated by plague and collapse and the Gnome brewery was destroyed. The lone survivor, a Gnome named A'Chouffe visited the brother-in-laws and imparted the recipe of the classic golden La Chouffe to them. They have included his image on every bottle ever since. (Download the app to see him all over town as well!) Join us this week for some fun events that celebrate the Gnomes who have passed down this recipe and kept it alive for us to enjoy. They brew some great beer and there will be lots of fun gnomes floating about in their red gnome hats all over town... Will you catch one near you?

As craft beer takes the nation by storm -- making kings out of once-small brewers like Boston Beer -- the same trends that are driving sales of the alcoholic beverage may soon drive sales of its non-alcoholic counterpart: craft soda. The craft soda industry has emerged on the same formula that brought craft beer to the forefront of American interests. Namely, the product's high-quality, natural ingredients give it a richer, more flavorful finish than the mass-produced, high fructose corn syrup-laden sodas made by Coca-Cola and PepsiCo . Besides being a better-tasting drink, craft soda is also much healthier.

Pale, tart and crisp-sour wheat beers are some of the least alcoholic and most refreshing beer styles. Although these styles are not brewed in the capacity that they once were, they have seen a mini revival in the past decade-especially in the U.S.-where some craft brewers have not only adopted the traditional German and Belgian brewing methods, but also modernized them with the addition of interesting herbs, fruits and spices.

Shrimp Skewers with Spicy IPA Vinaigrette
By: Ales Kitchen
This simple spicy and delicious recipe makes for a great appetizer or even dinner. Ingredients:
2 lbs shrimp, peeled and de-veined
8 cloves of garlic, peeled 1 Tbsp agave nectar 1 tsp fresh ground coriander 2-3 Tbsp fresh thyme, light chop 2 habanero peppers, quartered and stemmed and seeded 1/4 cup white wine vinegar 1/2 cup India Pale Ale Pinch of ancho chile powder Canola oil (around 3/4 cup or more for emulsification) Kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper Directions: Quarter, stem and seed the habaneros. (Keep a few seeds if you want a little more heat.) Toss the habanero, nectar, IPA, vinegar, thyme, ancho and a pinch of salt and pepper into a blender. In a small pan over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of canola oil. Add in the whole garlic with a pinch of salt. Toast for about five minutes. They should turn golden brown. Add the garlic in the blender. Puree until smooth. The color should be green. If not, add a bit more thyme until you get a nice green color. When the puree is smooth, slowly start adding in the canola oil and blend until emulsified. Heat grill or grill pan on high. If using wooden skewers, then submerse the skewers in some water for about 15 minutes. Sprinkle salt and fresh cracked black pepper over the shrimp. Toss in some canola oil. Skewer four shrimp per skewer (don't want to overcrowd). Place on grill and cook around two minutes per side until cooked through. When done, plate the shrimp and pour the vinaigrette all over the shrimp and garnish with more thyme.
