Vegetables in Beer--sounds weird, tastes great.
According the the BJCP Guidelines, there is actually a category for Fruit beer as well as a Vegetable/Spice/Herb beer. This shows how many breweries are getting creative using these produce items to really influence their beer recipes. Typically fruit and vegetable beers have a low hop bitterness and the malt is hidden slightly in the taste so that the fruit or vegetable stands out.
Pumpkins, although some think it's a vegetable, is actually a fruit. The use of pumpkins, whether whole pumpkin or extract, in beers for the fall season coming up are extremely popular. The use of spices like cinnamon and allspice among other things give it that delicious fall flavor, even when it is 95 degrees outside in Florida. Really, it still makes me feel like maybe there's an ounce of cold outside ...(yeah, right.)
There are some breweries who use yams or sweet potatoes in their beer as well rather than pumpkin. Lazy Magnolia's Jefferson Sweet Potato Stout, for example, is one of them that's year-round. The profile range you can get from a vegetable, although more subtle than a fruit, is unique and flavorful and adds a different dynamic to the style. Certain hops and malts you use can compliment the veggie.
We are familiar with Chatoe Rogue's farm influenced beers, as well as their pumpkin that comes out soon. Twisted Pine's Farm To Foam series, also for example, experiments with different freshly grown in-state vegetables that have taken off to be a hit like carrots and cucumbers. Remember Cigar City's Cucumber Saison? And hey, veggies are good for you right?
Cheers, Brown Specialty Team

Beer Guy: Already time for Oktoberfest brews, and beery fall fest are right around the corner
By: Tony Kiss
Here we are at the tail end of August and it's already time for those big malty Oktoberfest beers and the celebrations that go with them. Actually, some of the Oktoberfest or marzen beers have been on the market a few weeks, including selections from Samuel Adams and Winston-Salem's Foothills Brewing. Our all-time German favorite, Ayinger Fest-Marzen is back, and it won't last long. This big old-world brew can be found at such shops as the Asheville Wine Market. Meanwhile, Asheville's own Highland Brewing will release its popular Clawhammer Oktoberfest beer Aug. 30 with a big bash at the brewery, 12 Old Charlotte Highway. Highland has increased production of the beer this year, company founder Oscar Wong said. But it's never enough to satisfy demand. This is a true marzen beer, made as a lager (the only Highland beer to regularly be made that way). Look for it in 12 ounce six-packs and 12-packs and draft around town.

 Crowdfunding meets craft beer
By: Devin Karambelas, USA TODAY
A few weeks ago, the first-ever crowdfunding site for craft beer entrepreneurs made its debut with CrowdBrewed, and another site called CraftFund is slated to launch this fall.
A lot has happened since Asa Foster and Matt Katase were brewing craft beer in their fraternity house's garage as Carnegie Mellon University undergrads.
While in college, the two friends decided to start their own craft beer brewery. They switched to self-designed majors, learned as much about the craft beer industry as possible and graduated in May 2012 with the intent to launch The Brew Gentlemen Beer Co.
But the pair still needed additional funds to move the brewery forward. So last September, Foster and Katase turned to crowdfunding site Kickstarter to get the financial backing for production. For full article |

Forget the wine, South Africans thirsty for craft beers
By : Kiesha Porter, CNN Cape Town, South Africa (CNN) -- The Western Cape might be South Africa's wine capital -- renowned around the world as the home of some of the country's most famous labels -- but not far from Stellenbosch's fertile vineyards there's another drink brewing up a storm. Inspired by an international boom for local, independent microbreweries, the business of craft beer has also taken off in South Africa recently, as growing numbers of small producers are experimenting with styles and techniques to satisfy a rising thirst for new flavors and novel brews. "There is a massive demand," says Dan Badenhorst, co-founder of Devil's Peak Brewing Company, just one of the several microbreweries to come out of Cape Town in recent times. "We started off in a garage, from there we bought our own 500-liter system and now we are in this new 1,500-liter system," he adds. "Constantly, our biggest challenge has been keeping up with the demand."

Beer and Brown Sugar Ribeye Steak
By: Troy Black, All Fired Up Cookbook
Yield: Serves 4 Level: Easy We all know that beer is an awesome steak marinade and that a little sugar makes everything better. Apply that logic to a juicy ribeye and turn out a steak you can really be proud of. Ingredients
- 1/2 cup traditional porter or stout of your choice
- 1/4 cup teriyaki marinade and sauce
- 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
- 4 (1-inch thick) rib-eye steaks (about 3 pounds)
- 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 3/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
Directions
Whisk together first 3 ingredients in a large shallow dish or zip-top plastic freezer bag. Add steaks, turning to coat. Cover or seal, and chill 24 hours, turning once. Preheat grill to 350° to 400° (medium-high) heat. Remove steaks from marinade, discarding marinade. Sprinkle steaks with salt and pepper. Grill, covered with grill lid, 5 minutes on each side or to desired degree of done. Remove from grill, and let stand 5 minutes.
