Founders in Florida

Can you believe it? Craft beer has gotten so big that the Founders release in Florida has buzzed all over the state among other states as pretty newsworthy. People are inquiring about how much KBS Florida gets compared to their home state, what specialty beers we get, when are we getting cans....It's really exciting.  The whole beer community is always anxiously awaiting new beer to come to the sunshine state, while still supporting the other great craft brands we have like Bell's, Left Hand, Duvel, and Oskar Blues and continuing to show that passion to others. With new breweries booming every year locally, and national and international brands expanding, we sure are in a great state to enjoy craft beer.

The Founders Brewing Launch Events kick-off next week starts on Monday at the Cigar City Tasting room. The rest of the Founders launch events are listed below to get a chance to meet the Founders Brewing team and drink what Ratebeer.com polls as the 3rd best brewery in the country.

Cheers,

Beer Remains America's Preferred Alcoholic Beverage
By: Julia Herz and Bart Watson

Last week Gallup® released their annual alcohol survey. Despite numbers that were quite similar to those in recent years, the presentation of this data-including Gallup's own sub-header, "Younger drinkers most likely to have shifted preferences away from beer"-has led to a number of quasi-apocalyptic headlines for beer, including one outlet pronouncing "The Stunning Collapse of Beer in America."

Certainly sensationalized, the headline could have easily (and truthfully) been replaced by the following, "Beer Remains America's Preferred Alcoholic Beverage" and the sub-head, "Young drinkers still prefer beer over wine and spirits."

Summarizing the 2013 data, Gallup even states: "Despite these changes, beer remains the preferred beverage of 18- to 29- and 30- to 49-year-olds." The survey found that 41% of 18-29 year olds prefer beer, versus 24% for wine and 28% for spirits, and that 43% of 30-49 year olds prefer beer, versus 29% for wine and 24% for spirits.

USPS suggests lifting alcohol delivery ban
By: Andrew Miga, Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Special delivery from the post office - beer, wine and spirits, if Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe has his way.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Donahoe said Thursday delivery of alcoholic beverages is on his wish list as the agency considers ways to raise revenue and save money after losing $16 billion last year. He also said he endorses ending most door-to-door and Saturday mail deliveries as a way to help stabilize the service's finances.

Donahoe said delivering alcohol has the potential to raise as much as $50 million a year. He mentioned how customers might want to, for example, mail bottles of wine home when they tour vineyards. Donahoe said his agency has looked at the possibility of using special boxes that would hold two, four or six bottles and ship for a flat-rate anywhere in the country.

What is the difference between porter and stout?
By: Keith Gribbins

Like many old beer stories, porters and stouts have a hazy history together. Today, American craft brewers produce both stouts and porters, marketed and sold as individual styles and flavors, but what exactly are the differences in these two seemingly similar beers? Is a porter just a lighter, sweeter stout? Is a stout just a stronger porter? Is it all about roasted barley? Is it all about chocolate malts? What is the difference between porter and stout?

According to The Beer Connoisseur Online"If we go back to the latter half of the 18th century and the first part of the 19th century, stout, more particularly brown stout, was simply the name for the strongest version of porter. Here's a quote from a book called 'A General Dictionary of Commerce, Trade and Manufactures,' published in 1810: 'Porter may be divided into two classes, namely brown-stout and porter properly so called ... Brown-stout is only a fuller-bodied kind of porter than that which serves for ordinary drinking. A great deal of this is exported to America and the West Indies."

Chocolate Stout S'More Shakes

By: Someone Left the Cake out in the Rain

Yield:
Serves 2-4
Level:
Easy

Everything you love about a s'more all combined into a shake made with your favorite chocolate stout. These s'more shakes absolutely need to make an appearance at your next dinner party! Hint, this recipe for marshmallow makes a ton, and is delicious de-fluffed on ice cream, pretzels, or other sweet treats.

Serving Advice:

If constructed ahead of time, make sure you give them a little time to thaw so they are sippable.

Ingredients

For Shake:

- 4 scoops vanilla bean ice cream

- 1 cup chocolate stout, very cold

- 1/2 cup whole milk

- 2 Tbsp good quality chocolate syrup

- 1 tsp vanilla extract

pinch salt

For Marshmallow Frosting:

- 4 large egg whites, room temperature

- 1 cup superfine sugar

- 1/4 tsp cream of tartar

- 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the S'More Shake:

- Marshmallow frosting

- 1 Tbsp chocolate syrup

- 3 Tbsp Golden Grahams, crushed

Directions

Shake:

Add all ingredients to blender and blend until smooth.

Marshmallow Frosting:

In the heatproof bowl of an electric mixer, add egg whites, sugar and cream of tartar. Set over a saucepan with simmering water. Whisk constantly until sugar is dissolved and whites are warm to the touch, 3 to 4 minutes.

Transfer bowl to electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment and beat, starting on low speed, gradually increasing to high, until stiff, glossy peaks form, 5 to 7 minutes. Add vanilla, and mix until combined.

S'more Shake:

Put chocolate syrup on small plate, and crushed grahams on separate plate. Dip glasses in syrup, then in grahams. Pour shake into each glass. Pipe marshmallow topping on shakes. Toast marshmallow with small kitchen torch. Enjoy!

*ALSO TRY:

Seasonal Pumpkin  Shake.

Try replacing the chocolate stout for a pumpkin beer and the chocolate syrup for caramel sauce to whip up a tasty spin on a pumpkin shake!
