Collaboration Beers: Merging Creativity

The craft beer culture in America is a continuously growing and unifying culture for beer drinkers. With hundreds and hundreds of breweries nowadays, it's hard to pick a favorite, and we like that. One thing that separates our craft beer culture perhaps from other industries is that we embrace competition.

When another brewery (we'll call it Brewery B) hits the market of Brewery A, we know the beer goers will be excited to drink Brewery B. Those drinkers will now become more receptive to open their mind to drink other craft beers and thus drink Brewery A and B's beers. Each American craft brewery grows the education and the craft beer movement as a whole, so Brewery A supports Brewery B, and vise-versa. Now isn't that special?

An even better embrace of another brewery is brewing a collaboration beer. Brewery A and Brewery B join efforts with their skills, experience, and personalized brand image to create an awesome collaborative beer that both parties and craft beer drinkers can really appreciate. It can also allow them to create something out of their boundaries or out of the ordinary that they wouldn't normally do.

Some collaborations in the works right now to look out for:
Coronado Brewing/Cigar City Brewing, Cigar City/Sierra Nevada, Cigar City/New Belgium, Green Room Brewing/Tomoka Brewery, Engine 15 Brewing/Tomoka Brewery, 7venth Sun/B. Nektar, Swamp Head Brewing/Terrapin Beer, and Saint Somewhere/Redlight Red Light.

Cheers,

'Drinking Buddies' Director: Craft beer 'dominates my life'
By: Jim Galligan

It should come as no surprise that craft beer is the centerpiece of director Joe Swanberg's new romantic dramedy "Drinking Buddies," because the man is a massive beer geek.

The film stars Olivia Wilde ("TRON: Legacy") and Jake Johnson (Fox's "The New Girl") as a pair of coworkers at a Chicago brewery who are drawn to each other despite being in relationships with other people. It also stars craft beer. Lots and lots of craft beer.

"I started homebrewing four years ago, and it led me to try new beers to taste what other people were doing," Swanberg told TODAY.com.

In a sequence of events that many beer nerds can relate to, this exploration of the craft beer landscape became an obsession of sorts for the filmmaker. "Outside of making movies, craft beer is now the thing that dominates my life," Swanberg said.

Amen, Joe.

The Case for Table IPAs
By: Beer Editor, Draft Magazine

We've been keeping track of the burgeoning session IPA trend for a few years now-we named Drake's Alpha Session one of our Top 25 Beers of 2012-but I think it's pretty safe to say that, at this point, the movement is in full-on trend mode. The only problem: For some, the name is a bit confusing.

There's quite a bit of dirt that's kicked up on the consumer end every time the term "session IPA" is mentioned. Some call the "IPA" part gimmicky and misleading; while others argue most examples aren't truly session beers (commence the 4.0% vs. 4.5% ABV argument). I propose a solution. But first, let's look at the numbers.

So, what's a session IPA? Well, that's a damn good question without an official answer. Based on the commercial examples out there, here's what we know: Stylistically, session IPAs actually fall within the American pale ale category; they just hit on the statistical extremes of the style. Session IPAs typically clock in south of 5% ABV (pale ales range: 4.6 to 6.2%) and north of 40 IBUs (pale ales range: 30 to 45 IBUs). A lot of them are also dry-hopped, adding a bold hop aroma that intensifies the overall perception of hops.

The Beer Run: What to look for--and avoid--in beer-drinking companions
By: Blair Anthony Robertson

Moments before sitting down at home to write this, I popped open a beer - the deliciously malty Coloma Brown by American River Brewing Co. in Rancho Cordova - and poured it into a tall glass, admiring the toffee-colored foam as it climbed to the rim.

It made me think: This beer experience would be much better shared.

Yes, beer is social. It's inclusive. Men and women share it, analyze it, celebrate it. And yet it's not necessarily easy finding reliable beer drinking companions.

So I've come up with a list of appealing - and not so appealing - traits of a beer-drinking buddy.

Unappealing:

1. C'mon dude! One more.

OK, I hate this person. You're at a pub. You've got things to do later in the day. You've set your limit at two really good beers. But your "friend" won't let you go. He buys you a third, which you nurse awkwardly. Then a fourth. "C'mon dude!" he says. A good beer pal doesn't force the issue. Even better, choose a buddy who actually has a life - like you do.

IPA Ceviche Lettuce Wraps

By: The Beeroness

Yield:
Serves 4
Level:
Easy

These seemingly dainty looking no-cook treats will fool you. These tasty mango and shellfish filled lettuce cups have a sharp bite of beer and a punch of spicy heat.

Ingredients

-1 lb raw shrimp, diced

- ½ cup lemon juice

- ½ cup lime juice

- 1 mango, peeled and diced

- 1 tomato, diced

- ½ red onion, diced

- 1 jalapeno, diced, seeds removed

- ¼ cup lime juice

- ¼ cup lemon juice

- 1 tsp sriracha

- 2/3 cup IPA of your choice (ex. Nectar IPA, Stone IPA, Jai Alai)

- 4 heads endive

- 1 head radicchio

Directions

Place the shrimp in a small bowl. Cover with ½ cup lime juice and ½ cup lemon juice. Cover and refrigerate until the shrimp have turned pink, about 2 hours.

In a separate bowl combine the remaining ingredients (except the radicchio and the endive), allow to marinate for at least one hour.

Just prior to serving, drain the shrimp, add to the mango bowl and toss to combine.

Scoop a few tablespoons of the ceviche into the leaves of the endive and the radicchio, serve chilled

Note:

For a lower heat level, reduce Sriracha to 1/4 or 1/2 tsp.
