July 5, 2013

I'm getting a bit confused these days. Yes, every brewery has an anniversary...the day they opened up the brewery and all was good and the beer gods rejoiced. But with all the limited release beers that come out now, each brewery is coming up with anniversaries of the types of beer they are brewing. For example, it is Stone's 17th anniversary of being in business but they just came out with RuinTen...the recreation of the tenth anniversary of their Ruination beer from last year. It is now added to their annual line-up. The Bruery just turned 5 so they have brought out Bois (hidden meaning...wood in French) but they are best known for their series of Christmas beers starting with "A Partridge in a Pear Tree" and now up to "4 Calling Birds" and soon..."5 Golden Rings" or has that one already come out?!?

I am certainly looking forward to trying all these beers, but with over 2,500 craft breweries already open and over 700 more coming online I don't know how I am going to keep track of which anniversary beer, holiday beer, or limited release beer I have had or not had. I can already see myself at a bottle tasting...."Yes the 5th anniversary from brewery so and so was the one with the delicious fig taste and notes of plum.  Wait a second...I think that was the re-release of the 8th anniversary from that other brewery!". I think there is an app for this but I am not sure I am ready to become that type of beer geek yet.

Bittersweet Lenny's R.I.P.A

He'Brew David's Slingshot
The first lager in the He'Brew family, this summer, hoppy lager blends fire, water, malt, yeast, hops, and the character of the brewer. In the spirits of a slew of Davids and Slingshots, Shmaltz hoists their tribute to the glory of summer. L'Chaim! 5.5% ABV
Belhaven Black Scottish Stout
Belhaven Black Scottish Stout really is something completely different. Bursting with roast coffee and chocolate flavors, this is a truly genuine and premium pint. Brewed using pure Scottish water and a unique blend of Scottish triple malts sourced from the finest locally grown barley. 4.2% ABV (bottle and draft)
Lazy Magnolia Backwoods Belgian

Lazy Magnolia releases Backwoods Belgian Ale as this years limited summer seasonal. This summer ale is a Belgian-Style Golden Ale brewed with a "Southern" infusion of Honeysuckle flowers. It pours pale gold under a fluffy white head, lightly hopped, with fruity esters of orange, banana, and traces of sweet honey in the nose. Effervescent and refreshing, this full-bodied Golden Ale is their interpretation of the classic style with a touch of Southern sweetness. 8.5% ABV (bottle only)

Blue Point Double Blonde
Blondes have more fun, so Double Blondes must have even more fun. Well, whatever your theory, this Double Blonde Ale is a very good thing. Ingredients such as European honey malt and pure cane sugar give this Amsterdam-inspired strong ale, just the right amount of sweetness and body. Blue Point Brewing's Double Blonde Ale is a dangerously drinkable specialty brew and available in the Spring. Double Blond Ale sells out quickly, so get it while you can. 7.4% ABV (draft only)

The Bruery Bois

Their fifth anniversary ale is brewed in the English-style Old Ale tradition using their house Belgian yeast strain and then blended using the solera method, where a portion of each of their anniversary ales is saved in barrels and blended with the next year's production, providing more complexity and depth of character that comes with age. 15.5% ABV (bottle only)

Avery Twenty Anniversary Ale
What else would you expect from a bunch of severely hop-obsessed brewers to celebrate such a glorious occasion? Anything other than a massively hopped IPA would be an affront to Avery's rich history of loving excessive use of that beautiful flower, Humulus Lupulus. 9.7% ABV (bottle and draft)
Stone RuinTen IPA
They first released this decidedly indelicate beer in 2012, as Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their beloved bitter Stone Ruination IPA. Stone RuinTen IPA uses the same recklessly hoppy recipe as the 2012 release; only the name has changed, as they plan to unleash this belligerently delicious hop monster upon the public annually from now on. They have packed a whopping five pounds of hops into each barrel, and cranked up the ABV to stand up to the hop onslaught. The results are glorious, and we know you'll rejoice in tasting this audacious gem of hoppy splendor once again. You're welcome. 10.8% ABV (bottle and draft)

BEER NEWS
By: Kendall Jones

People need to understand that a keg is the property of the brewery. I know it sounds silly to point that out, but something happened recently that brings up this issue. If you happen to find a keg laying around, whether it be on the side of the road or in a dark corner of your garage, understand that the keg belongs to a brewery.

Someone emailed a picture to Silver City Brewing of a keg (one of its kegs) sitting at the Goodwill store in Seattle. It was for sale. Apparently someone had donated it, so Goodwill just put a price tag on it and offered it up for sale. By the time Silver City contacted Goodwill, it had been sold. Goodwill Industries, to be sure, didn't understand that they were dealing with lost or stolen property. Let's be clear about that. Goodwill didn't know the keg actually belonged to someone that should have been contacted. I am not slamming Goodwill Industries-it's a great organization.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Nearly 80 years ago Richmond revolutionized the beer world. For it was in this Southern city in 1935 that canned beer - complete with how-to instructions - was first sold.

Krueger's Cream Ale and its punch-top can became an instant hit, propelling the humble beer can to iconic status. That is, until Americans returned to bottles and the beloved craft brews they contained, a cultural turn that left canned beer looking decidedly low-brow.

But more recently craft brewers rediscovered cans, realizing they weren't just retro-cool, but with a few tweaks might even be able to kick bottles in the can.
