Filtered or Unfiltered? Does it matter?

Before Craft Beer really started growing to where it is today, filtered beer was the norm. Filtered gives you that "bright" clear appearance, while unfiltered gives you a more hazy and a slightly cloudy appearance.  Today, unfiltered beer seems to be neck and neck with filtered just based on the beer style's intent. When you see hazy, think tasty.

For example, hefeweizens, some Belgian beers and American wheat beers are traditionally meant to be an unfiltered beer. Other styles sometimes also pick up that approach. Unfiltered mostly means that the beers have not gone through the filtration process of getting rid of any remaining yeast, protein, tannins, etc. in the beer. Does that mean it is better or worse? No; it really is a choice of preference and depends on the style and flavor you are reaching for when brewing or drinking. Not filtering a beer gives it a lot of flavor from the original ingredients used in the brewing process.

What about those sediments that you sometimes see in some of the unfiltered beer bottles? Those are actually the yeast parts that are unfiltered!  Some beers are bottle conditioned meaning that brewers add yeast and sugars to the bottling to make sure the beer will be well carbonated.  As the yeast eats the sugar, it produces alcohol and Co2 as a byproduct. By rolling the bottle on a table the yeast will be re-agitated and you can enjoy all parts of your tasty beer at once as it was meant to be enjoyed.

So if the question comes to filtered or unfiltered in your beer selection, remember it really shouldn't be the question you decide on. The question should be, what kind of beer style would you like?

Cheers,

How to incorporate craft beer into family vacations
By: John Thompson

So some of us are luckier than others. My spouse gives me a lot of freedom, but I do my best not to abuse the privilege. Over the past decade, beer has gone from something I enjoyed, to something that I am quite passionate about. So when I am travelling out of state, I really like to try to explore the local beer culture. This is easy on business trips, since most of the day you are spending in meetings. Then after the meetings are over most of my peers are looking to have a nice refreshing beverage. If you are quick, you can throw out the suggestion to go to an establishment that carries finer malt beverages.

A family vacation is a different animal. Especially when the "vacation" is barely more than 24 hours.

Step 1: Plan Ahead

So it's not something that you just start doing the night before. It should be something that you incorporate into your lifestyle. Sounds pretty horrible and not fun, doesn't it? Guess what it might not be the most fun thing you've ever done, but it certainly isn't hard.

What is That Keg Doing at the Goodwill Store?
By: Kendall Jones

People need to understand that a keg is the property of the brewery. I know it sounds silly to point that out, but something happened recently that brings up this issue. If you happen to find a keg laying around, whether it be on the side of the road or in a dark corner of your garage, understand that the keg belongs to a brewery.

Someone emailed a picture to Silver City Brewing of a keg (one of its kegs) sitting at the Goodwill store in Seattle. It was for sale. Apparently someone had donated it, so Goodwill just put a price tag on it and offered it up for sale. By the time Silver City contacted Goodwill, it had been sold. Goodwill Industries, to be sure, didn't understand that they were dealing with lost or stolen property. Let's be clear about that. Goodwill didn't know the keg actually belonged to someone that should have been contacted. I am not slamming Goodwill Industries-it's a great organization.

Kegs are expensive. For that reason, and for other reasons, kegs are highly valued by their owners. That's why you pay such a hefty deposit if you ever buy a keg of beer. The brewery wants (needs) that keg back. Breweries take kegs very seriously. Keg repatriation is a big deal. Not only are they expensive, but at times they can be hard to get.

Breaking Bad beer, Downtown Abbey wine, and 5 other pop culture alcohols
By: Samantha Rollins

Thanks to some enterprising companies, you can now drink like a dutchess or swill like a Simpson.

Walter White may be a fictional character, but that hasn't stopped New Mexico's Marble Brewery from dedicating a beer to him. The craft brewery's new "Heisenberg's Dark" is an India black ale named as an homage to Breaking Bad's leading man (Heisenberg is White's drug-dealing pseudonym). Right on the heels of Marble's reveal, the delightfully stuffy PBS hit Downton Abbey announced a similar plan to create a special "vintage" wine line made with the type of grapes the British aristocracy would have imported from France in the early 1900s. But these boozy beverages are hardly the first to boast pop-culture tie-ins. Here, a look at five other drinks named after beloved films and television shows...
