Did we go from Winter straight into Summer? I think I blinked and missed the Spring this year. Suddenly it is 95 degrees F and 100% humidity with the tropical sun beating down like a heat lamp in an interrogation. Fortunately there are a lot of beers by which you can quench your summer thirst with whether is is just a nice light ale or a bright and fluffy Kolsch or something a little more complex like a spicy Saison or a Berliner Weisse. Certainly the breweries in the South know that they have to put out some thirst quenchers for the season.
Some of the other breweries aren't really sticking with this philosophy however. I guess whenever your Anniversary is...you have to make a beer to celebrate. But this year it seems that breweries are going all out with lots of hops, flavor, and alcohol. Avery's Twentieth Anniversary is a massively hopped up IPA...think Maharajah on steroids. Stone just came out with the Tenth Anniversary version or Ruination or RuinTen as they are calling it. Another palate crusher. And these aren't beers that are meant to be saved either....highly hopped beers should be consumed as fresh as possible to really get the full aroma and flavor as the brewer intended.
And while you are at it...check out The Bruery's Fifth Anniversary Bois, which uses portions of the 4 previous anniversary beers to blend into this version. Or how about the Double White from Ommegang or the Double Blonde from Bluepoint? These aren't your normal light hearted summer crushing beers...unless you really want to crush yourself!

Lazy Magnolia Backwoods Belgian
Lazy Magnolia releases Backwoods Belgian Ale as this years limited summer seasonal. This summer ale is a Belgian-Style Golden Ale brewed with a "Southern" infusion of Honeysuckle flowers. It pours pale gold under a fluffy white head, lightly hopped, with fruity esters of orange, banana, and traces of sweet honey in the nose. Effervescent and refreshing, this full-bodied Golden Ale is their interpretation of the classic style with a touch of Southern sweetness. 8.5% ABV (bottle only)
|
Blue Point Double Blonde
Blondes have more fun, so Double Blondes must have even more fun. Well, whatever your theory, this Double Blonde Ale is a very good thing. Ingredients such as European honey malt and pure cane sugar give this Amsterdam-inspired strong ale, just the right amount of sweetness and body. Blue Point Brewing's Double Blonde Ale is a dangerously drinkable specialty brew and available in the Spring. Double Blond Ale sells out quickly, so get it while you can. 7.4% ABV (draft only)

Brewery Ommegang Double White
|
The Bruery Bois
Their fifth anniversary ale is brewed in the English-style Old Ale tradition using their house Belgian yeast strain and then blended using the solera method, where a portion of each of their anniversary ales is saved in barrels and blended with the next year's production, providing more complexity and depth of character that comes with age. 15.5% ABV (bottle only)

Avery Twenty Anniversary Ale
What else would you expect from a bunch of severely hop-obsessed brewers to celebrate such a glorious occasion? Anything other than a massively hopped IPA would be an affront to Avery's rich history of loving excessive use of that beautiful flower, Humulus Lupulus. 9.7% ABV (bottle and draft)
|
Stone RuinTen IPA
They first released this decidedly indelicate beer in 2012, as Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their beloved bitter Stone Ruination IPA. Stone RuinTen IPA uses the same recklessly hoppy recipe as the 2012 release; only the name has changed, as they plan to unleash this belligerently delicious hop monster upon the public annually from now on. They have packed a whopping five pounds of hops into each barrel, and cranked up the ABV to stand up to the hop onslaught. The results are glorious, and we know you'll rejoice in tasting this audacious gem of hoppy splendor once again. You're welcome. 10.8% ABV (bottle and draft)

Funky Buddha Hop Gun
In a packed field of India Pale Ales, what does it take to pull away from the rest? To Funky Buddha, the answer is Hop Gun IPA. Lift a pint: from first sniff to last sip, their flagship IPA drinks like an ode to hoppy goodness. Galena, Cascade, and Nelson Sauvin hops burst forth with an unmistakably heady aroma. Flavors of grapefruit, honey, pink peppercorn, and pineapple mingle with a malt body that balances caramel and biscuit character with the kind of crisp, dry finish that pairs well with warm weather. 7.7% ABV (draft only)
|
Funky Buddha Floridian
Unfiltered and refreshing, their take on a German-style wheat beer is full on flavor yet light on the palate. Authentic hefeweizen yeast creates the compelling aromas of bananas, citrus, and cloves, while the all wheat and pilsner malt body perfectly captures the brilliance of an orange-and yellow-flecked Florida sunset. 5.6% ABV (draft only)

Terrapin Maggie's Peach Farmhouse Ale
The newest addition to their season sessions line is Maggie's Peach Farmhouse Ale. This refreshing summer offering has all the flavor and aroma of a freshly picked peaches (to the tune of 1,000 lbs per 100 barrel batch!) combined with the complexity of a well executed farmhouse ale. Some of you may remember Maggie's older sister, Side Project Volume 7, one of Spike's first foray into farmhouse ales. This newest version is just as lovely, should age just as well and has the uniquely GA flavor of fresh summer peaches! 5.3% ABV (bottle and draft)

When you make a habit of incorporating beer into vacations, you start to realize that breweries, brewpubs and craft brewers pop up just about everywhere you can imagine.
We've been writing about beer and vacations for three years now and have come to realize that no list we put together is comprehensive enough. Our first list of craft beer vacation destinations had some glaring omissions, most notably the entire states of Michigan and Colorado. Our follow-up only left folks thirsty for more and our list of the top beer vacation cities from last summer seemed pretty small at 10. Even when we boiled it down to brewpubs worth visiting, we eventually had to expand our scope to brewpubs in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

Label approval is in for the second Game of Thrones beer in the series.
As first reported by BeerPulse back in March, HBO had applied for a trademark for 'Take the Black.' Three months later, that concept has now come to life with a new beer label now available.

This past weekend, the entire craft beer community flocked to the Big Apple for SAVOR Weekend, a food and beer pairing event/expo which trumps all others. The weekend fills the city with some of the biggest names in craft beer. I'm not talking just the "breweries," but more like the owners and brewmasters that are there to represent their brands and meet their adoring beer-drinking public. Arriving before the event gave some time to explore some of the best beer bars in the country. Needless to say it was a delicious beer-inspired weekend that will not soon be outdone.
