So it is about to finally happen in Broward County....our very first production brewery, the Funky Buddha Brewery, is about to open on June 1st in Oakland Park. The Funky Buddha Brewery has been brewing up some great beers in Boca Raton at their lounge for some time and have built quite the following. They are now taking it to a whole new level. They are going from brewing on a 1.5 barrel system (apx. 45 gallons per batch) to a 30 barrel system (apx. 930 gallons per batch). Shortly you will be able to find Hop Gun IPA and Floridian German Style Wheat Ale at your local watering hole not to mention being able to stop by their 3,000 sq. ft. tasting room to sample all their limited release beers such as Maple Bacon Porter, Key Lime Berliner Weiss, and No Crusts (also known as PB&J) to name a few.

And this is just the beginning of the local breweries that will be opening in South Florida.  It won't be long before Wynwood Brewing is up and running and then Most Wanted in Doral starts brewing up some tasty treats. Add this to Tequesta Brewing and Due South that are already cranking out the fresh brews and South Florida will be replete with lots of hometown great local craft beers.

It may be summer....but it is the spring of Local Craft beer in South Florida.

Terrapin Maggie's Peach Farmhouse Ale
The newest addition to their season sessions line is Maggie's Peach Farmhouse Ale. This refreshing summer offering has all the flavor and aroma of a freshly picked peaches (to the tune of 1,000 lbs per 100 barrel batch!) combined with the complexity of a well executed farmhouse ale. Some of you may remember Maggie's older sister, Side Project Volume 7, one of Spike's first foray into farmhouse ales. This newest version is just as lovely, should age just as well and has the uniquely GA flavor of fresh summer peaches! 5.3% ABV (bottle and draft)
Terrapin Twilight Road Warrior Kolsch
The Terrapin Road Warrior is brewed in honor of the Athens Terrapin Twilight Criterium, a professional bike race held in downtown Athens. Spike mimicked the exact process and ingredients that make a German-style kolsch great. Kolsch is a light-bodied, lightly hopped style that hails from Cologne, Germany. This particular example has a wonderful golden color and clarity, with subtle yet present hop character. Look for it on draft exclusively in the Athens area and at the Terrapin Twilight Criterium!
Shipyard Melonhead
A crisp, refreshing wheat ale perfect for warm summer days. This beer joins Shipyard's extremely popular seasonal lineup of Pumpkinhead and Applehead Ales. Fans are thirsting for more and this beer delivers the taste they crave.
Innis and Gunn Scottish Pale Ale
Given Scotland's climate, the words "Scottish" and "pale" fit hand in glove. For the second of their seasonal beers in 2013, they drew from historical recipes to craft this carefully balanced pale ale. Light and vibrant with fresh floral and citrus notes, it's perfect for whiling away precious spells of sunshine. 7% ABV (draft only)
2013 Stone Espresso Imperial Russian Stout
Espresso-roast coffee has thousands of aromatic and flavor compounds. A lot of what comes out in the final flavor depends on where the beans are grown and how they are roasted and blended. Stone fell in love with the espresso from San Diego's Ryan Bros. Coffee when they first tried it in a cask of Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale, and then later when using it to make espresso, "real" macchiatos, and lattes during one of their weekly "Espresso Friday" sessions. It's a blend of Indonesian and Central/South American coffee beans, dark roasted and blended to perfection. The flavor is bold and robust yet very smooth, with hints of citrus and berries, and they knew it would be a great addition to this year's "odd" version of our Stone Imperial Russian Stout. 11% ABV (bottle and draft)
Other returning favorites:
Look out for returning hits such as: Shiner Ruby Redbird (bottle and draft), Magic Hat Elderbettery (bottle and draft), Cisco Summer Of Lager (bottle only), Thomas Creek Chocolate Orange IPA (bottle and draft) and Victory Summer Love (bottle and draft).

BEER NEWS

Nothing takes the edge off the dog days of summer like a crisp, refreshing craft beer. These seasonal beers tend to be paler in color and sometimes more subtle in flavor, as the heavier, richer brews of the fall and winter can be a bit too heavy on the stomach in the warm weather. For the backyard barbecue, the beach house, and all the other places your summer adventures take you, here are 12 craft brews to enjoy during the hottest months of the year.

A brewery in Bolivia has come up with a way to get buzzed in more ways than one: coca beer.

Combining the thirst-quenching capability of beer with the stimulating effect of the Andean nation's coca leaf, Ch'ama is a coca and barley-based alcoholic drink that brewers claim helps locals and visitors cope with Bolivia's notorious high altitude (close to 12,00 ft).

"As good Germans we love beer," said Hamburg native Malina, according to The New York Daily News. "There are many types in Germany, but this coca beer is good because here in La Paz it helps us handle altitude sickness."

Ale and Pretzel Soft Caramels
By: Sprinkle Bakes

Yield:
75+ caramels
Level:
Easy, but be careful with the hot caramel!

Ingredients:

- 1 12 oz. bottle of Nectar Ale Hemp Brown or other brown ale, divided
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup light corn syrup
- 1 8 oz. package pretzel rods (can use pretzel sticks too)
- 1 roll of wax paper
- Scissors

Directions:

In a small saucepan bring 1 cup of the beer to a simmer and cook until reduced and syrupy.  This will take about 20 minutes and yield about 1 tsp. of concentrated beer flavoring.  Set aside.

Butter a 13 x 9 inch pan or 2 -9x9 inch pans and set aside. Combine remaining beer and all other ingredients except ale reduction in a heavy 4-5 quart pot.  Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally.  Butter will melt and mixture will begin to boil.

Continue to cook until candy thermometer reaches 244 degrees, this will take about 30 minutes.  You can test your caramel in a bowl of ice water to check the consistency.  It should form a firm ball.

When the correct temperature has been reached, stir in the beer reduction and remove from heat.  Pour into prepared pan(s) and top with pretzel rods.  Let cool for several hours or place in fridge until firm.  Remove caramel block from pan and turn pretzel-side up on a cutting board (if refrigerated, let caramel block warm up a little for easier cutting). Cut between pretzels and then into 1" pieces.  Cut wax paper into approx. 5 x 5 inch squares and wrap caramels.

NOTE: Caramels must be wrapped or they will lose their shape over time.  Use silicone pans for easy removal.
