American Craft Beer Week is Upon Us

Have you started drinking a lot of water and washed all of your beer shirts for American Craft Beer Week? Now is the time to prep yourself for countless beer events to honor this upcoming week where you will run into your fellow beer man who can appreciate the same.

From Monday through Sunday get ready to experience a palate-ful of flavorful hops, malts, fruits, yeasts, and all sorts of ingredients into one perfectly balanced glass; A week where you will discuss brewing, brewers, breweries, and probably some non-related beer conversations stemmed from said beer; A week to appreciate the work, ingredients, experimentation and time put into the beers you drink regularly or the limited time it comes out; and most important, a week to drink and enjoy these beers.

You may decide to go to a special release of Nectar Ales Black Xantus, or a tasting so that you can drink at home and celebrate, or perhaps you are planning by the day to attend all pint nights so you can keep the glasses for memory and then finish off at your local bar for a tap takeover of one of your favorite breweries. Wherever you are in Florida, just know that American breweries appreciate that craft beer in your hand and are raising their glasses to a toast from coast to coast.

Cheers,

Nectar Ales Black Xantus
Black Xantus is a rare bird and a very limited release. It is the First ever "big-beer " to be released under the Nectar Ales line. Barrel aged for 6 months in combination of Bourbon, retired Firestone Union and wine barrels and Infused with fair-trade, organic coffee from local roaster Jobella. Rich bourbon and coffee aromas greet the senses. Complex chocolate and tobacco flavors fill the palate. This beer displays a full-bodied mouth-feel and an overall balanced presentation. It would be a perfect pairing to rich chocolate desserts. 11.0% ABV
2013 Stone Espresso Imperial Russian Stout
Espresso-roast coffee has thousands of aromatic and flavor compounds. A lot of what comes out in the final flavor depends on where the beans are grown and how they are roasted and blended. Stone fell in love with the espresso from San Diego's Ryan Bros. Coffee when they first tried it in a cask of Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale, and then later when using it to make espresso, "real" macchiatos, and lattes during one of their weekly "Espresso Friday" sessions. It's a blend of Indonesian and Central/South American coffee beans, dark roasted and blended to perfection. The flavor is bold and robust yet very smooth, with hints of citrus and berries. 11.0% ABV
Three Palms Serendipity Sour Ale

This berliner weiss sour ale is slightly puckering throughout the taste with a pleasant sour nose and finish. 5.43% ABV

Lazy Magnolia Black and Gold
Black and Gold pays a tribute to the University of Central Florida. The recipe is Lazy Magnolia's Southern Golden Honey Ale. Brewed with locally produced honey, this light-bodied brew was designed specifically for the City of Hattiesburg, MS. This refreshing beer is noted by its smooth character and gentle, sweet honey finish. 6.0% ABV
Red Brick Black-Eye IPA

Black-Eye Rye, the 6th release from Red Brick's Brick Mason series, is an American-Style India Black Ale brewed with rye. Inspired by one of our favorite beer styles, it is black in color without the heavy chocolate or roasted characteristics that are present in most dark ales. We feature Cascade, Chinook and Citra hops for citrus and piney flavors and aromas. This beer carries a hoppy punch, like a Double IPA with a healthy addition of rye for added complexity. 8.0% ABV

Shipyard Melonhead
Crisp Wheat Ale with delightful aromatics and brewed with watermelon. 4.4% ABV
Look out for new and returning favorites like Ommegang Fleur de Houblon, Highland Little Hump Spring Ale, Peak Organic Summer Session, and Shipyard Summer Ale.

BeerCity USA poll open: Let's meet for a Beer
By: Charlie Papazian

The BeerCity USA 2013 poll is now open May 5 through 11:59 p.m., Friday, May 10. This annual Examiner based poll is now in its fifth year. Last year's poll saw nearly 56,000 votes cast for the honors of BeerCity USA 2012. Vote Now.

BeerCity USA poll highlights the spirit of support local, small town and big city Americans generate on behalf of their communities. BeerCity USA is not a measure of beer quality, number of breweries, volume of beer enjoyed nor any kind of "best-of-show" measurement.

It's an indicator of the coherent nature of beer communities. It celebrates and recognizes the importance of responsible enjoyment and social interaction. One could take a look at the numbers from many perspectives: economic impacts, breweries per capita, regulatory impact, beer consumption, comparative share of craft beer from craft brewers, blue versus red, winning baseball teams, stadium beer offerings, jobs created, big versus small, etc.

Florida Weiss: Our Own Style of Beer
By: David Minsky

While the upper U.S. West coast has a beer style to call its own (Cascadian Dark Ale), it appears that the craft beer movement in Florida has spawned a new style of beer: the Florida Weisse.

The second annual Berliner Bash on the Bay in Gulfport, Florida, was recently held on April 20 and several Florida brewers took the opportunity to showcase what exactly the Florida Weisse is all about.

A regional sour wheat beer that originated in Northern Germany, the Berliner Weisse is not superpotent --ranging anywhere from two to five percent alcohol-by-volume. Like the Berliner Weisse, the Florida Weisse is low-alcohol too. A low-ABV beer may not sound attractive compared to 13 percent-plus imperial stouts, but remember that alcohol is only a small part of its character.

In Germany, a U.S. beer invasion
By: Michael Birnbaum

BERLIN - Almost 65 years after Allied planes flew Western supplies into blockaded Berlin, a new American import is arriving by air: craft beer.

The beer is being flown in as part of a new surge of German interest in American brewing, upending a centuries-old relationship in which German beer defined the golden standard for brewing and Americans emulated it.

Now, with craft brewers in the United States capturing an ever-greater share of their home market, they are expanding in Germany as well. German consumers, intrigued by unfamiliar flavors, are purchasing more imported beer and are increasingly copying American efforts with their own small-scale brewing operations.

Back Forty Beer Co.'s Beer Cheese Sandwich
By: Back Forty Beer Co.

Yield:
2-4 depending on how cheesy you like it!
Level:
Easy

Back Forty Beer Co. is celebrating National Grilled Cheese Day by teaming up with Melt, a grilled cheese truck out of Birmingham, Ala. to makes the perfect grilled cheese sandwich using their Freckle Belly IPA.

Ingredients:

- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

- 2-3 tablespoons flour (for thickness)

- 3/4 cup of beer (we recommend hoppier beers to play with the sharpness of the cheese, like Back Forty Freckle Belly IPA)

- 1/3 cup of milk

- 8 ounces of grated cheese (Monterey Jack, Cheddar and American are awesome)

- Bread of your choice (Texas Toast is our favorite)

- Butter for spreading (softened)

Direction:

Melt the butter in a sauce pan over medium heat.

Whisk in the flour and stir for a couple minutes.

Add the milk and beer and stir well.

Reduce to low heat and add the cheese.

Cook (stirring often) until melted.

Butter the bread, add the cheese (add some more grated cheese if you want), and cook on a skillet until golden brown (flipping occasionally).
