American Craft Beer Week is a Month Away

Ladies and gents, get ready for MOTHER OF ALL BEER WEEKS, looked forward to all year and celebrated in all 50 states. Put on your over-worn beer shirts and join the rest of the country in American Craft Beer Week.

The Brewers Association originally had an American Beer Month, but in 2006 it was changed to a week-long coordinated effort to begin right before the busy summer beer season. They found that one one week's worth of activities all over the nation was found to be more manageable and and effective than a month. The term 'craft' was also added to in the title to be sure of the focus of the events. This week has become the largest national effort and focus on American craft beer.

American Craft Beer Week (ACBW) celebrates the growing number of beer lovers, the brewers behind these amazing beers, craft beer bars, and the American craft beer movement as a whole. Today's beer drinkers, whether it's a newbie, enthusiast, or hardcore beer geek, all make time to toast the week in some way.  ACBW is May 13th--19th this year, so mark your calendar and start looking out for events to join the celebration popping up everywhere. To find out some craft beer events in your area during that week, be sure to check out our
event
In the meantime, keep doing what you do and supporting the craft beer movement. You can find more information about the history of American Craft Beer Week at the Brewer's Association page or at Craftbeer.com.

Cheers,

Ommegang Fleur de Houblon

Nothing is more evocative of summer than the beautiful aroma of flowers, and the favored flowers of brewers are hops. Our brand new summer ale, Fleur de Houblon (Hop Flowers), is brewed to bring the many elements of summer into a refreshing and easy-to-drink Belgian-style ale. Fleur de Houblon is a rich gold color with distinct floral hops in the aroma that follow through in the taste. Whole-cone Bravo hops are used to impart their earthy, fruity, and floral aromas and flavors. The body and flavor are clean and dry, with pleasing complexity and spicy notes from both primary and secondary fermentation with our unique Ommegang house yeast. 6.8% ABV

B. Nektar Necromangocon

Many years ago, a mysterious book was discovered by a group of friends in a Ferndale, MI basement. A translation of its contents revealed the recipe for an ancient beverage using mango juice, honey, and black pepper. What they didn't realize was that creating the beverage had dire consequences. Stricken by fear after its completion, the friends tried to contain the terrifying forces into this very bottle. Once opened, however, no one can say for sure if it can be conquered. Defend your soul or join us... 6.0% ABV.

Ruckus Hedonism Red Ale

Breckenridge Summer Bright Ale (cans)

BEER NEWS

A humble creature that has long toiled in obscurity for the benefit of humankind is poised to win a small measure of the distinction it deserves: designation as Oregon's official state microbe.

It looks to be the first microbe to gain official state recognition.

The microbe in question, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, plays a key role in the state's economy. Without it, sugar would not become alcohol, and Oregon would not have a craft beer industry worth $2.4 billion.

That's a lot of yeast.

The man behind the yeast's pending glamour moment is Mark Johnson, a Republican state legislator from Hood River, Ore. The idea, he says, came from a home-brewing constituent, who suggested that the Legislature - which has already designated a state nut (hazelnut) and a state fruit (pear) - do the right thing by another living embodiment of Oregon's contribution to quality foodstuffs.

Craft Beer: Peace, Love & Hoppiness
By: Jordyn Cormier

I am proud to call myself a craft beer convert - a hophead if you will. After growing up in a fairly dry household, with the exception of my dad's occasional Bud-Light on hockey nights, I never expected to call myself a beer drinker. Why waste the calories? Ugh, and the taste! Oh, how naive I was.

A few years ago, my perception of beer completely shifted. My personal beer evolution was slow and progressive, from my first disdainful sip of the omnipresent, big-named American lagers, to the introduction of more flavorful imported big breweries. I was lead through the gates of the world of craft-brewdom with introduction to excellent medium-sized regional brewers, inevitably leading me to discover that some of the most well-crafted brews are closer than I thought. The beauty of craft beer is each concoction is completely unique in aroma, color, and taste, making each beer a tasty bottled adventure for your senses. There are so many shades, intensities, and styles of craft beer, it can be a bit overwhelming. But one thing remains constant. Craft beer is relatively small (less than 6 million barrels of annual production), independently owned (oftentimes by the master brewers themselves rather than non-brewer ownership), and of a generally  higher caliber than most large scale breweries. You can usually find out where the hops have been grown, what strain they are, what the water source is, and when the beer was canned or bottled, all by checking the container, calling up the brewery, or visiting their site on the internet.

Brewer Launches Topless Beer Can
By: FoxNews.Com

Bye, bye tiny openings and annoying tabs.

Brewing company Sly Fox has released a topless beer can it has dubbed the "360 Lid."

The new 360 Lid works kind of like a soup can, with a peel-back lid, exposing a 1.75-inch opening.

The company's head brewer Brian O'Reilly said on Today.com the new lid "allows the full flavor and aroma of the beer to hit the drinker's senses."

Rosemary and Feta Beer Biscuits

 Featured Cocktail:

Drag You Down to Helles

Ingredients:

- 4 oz. Cigar City Hotter Than Helles

- 2 oz Siesta Key Spiced Rum

- ½ oz. lime juice

- 1 oz. cinnamon syrup

- 3 wedges of blood orange

- Raw sugar (for glass rim)

The sweetness, spice, and mouthfeel of a truly great rum rivals fine bourbons and scotch. And what better way to balance that than with a dry and refreshing beer? This is a variation on the recipe designed by Luke Wederbrook, contributor to BeerMixology.com and bartender at Areal in Santa Monica, California. First, rim a tumbler glass with raw sugar, then place four or five ice cubes in the glass. In a cocktail shaker, add the beer, rum, lime juice, and cinnamon syrup. Shake well, and then strain into the tumbler. Garnish with blood orange.

Rosemary and Feta Beer Biscuits

By: Cookie + Kate

Yield:
  12 servings
Level:
Easy

This simple recipe for beer biscuits is a great addition to your beer recipe arsenal. To add variety in flavor and texture, experiment with different cheeses, beers or even nuts!

Ingredients:

- 3 cups whole wheat flour or whole wheat pastry flour
- 1 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp baking powder
- 2 Tbsp fresh rosemary, chopped
- 3/4 cup feta, cumbled
- 12 ounces wheat beer of your choice
- Up to 1/4 cup of water (if the dough is too dry)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375°F.

Mix the dry ingredients well, add your spices and cheese (optional), then pour in the beer and mix it all together.

If the dough seems very dry, slowly add up to 1/4 cup of water, until all of the flour is incorporated. Try not to over-mix.

Pour the dough into a lightly greased loaf pan or divide it into a muffin tin. Bake until golden brown, about 45 minutes for bread or 25 minutes for biscuits.

The recipe makes one loaf of bread or 12 good-sized biscuits. I'm partial to biscuits because there's more surface area for crust.

Variations: Use different types of beer. You can also add spices, cheese and/or nuts to change the flavor and texture of the beer bread.
