Summer isn't coming soon enough, but the beer is!
The Florida weather has been out of whack this Spring. The southeast can't seem to make up its mind with cold or hot, but we are waiting for what we know and love Florida for during Spring: the warm weather and wheat and citrusy beers! Bell's Oberon kegs have recently been tapped for an early summer seasonal in Michigan, but it makes me happy and a little selfish to know we have it all year here! And speaking of Michigan, and all year, I know you have surely heard the buzz... FOUNDERS IS COMING TO FLORIDA!
That's right! Founders, as in, Founders Brewing from Grand Rapids, Michigan, has signed on with Brown Distributing to be distributed statewide starting in May. *Additional information in our blog.
For more immediate excitement folks, next week is Jacksonville Beer Week. We have a lot of exciting events from April 1--7 so either make your rounds or take a trip up for something more special that catches your eye...how 'bout a full day of 51 taps of Engine 15 beers at the brewery or a night of all Florida produced beer at Green Room Brewing? How about you get some food, music, and fun at the Grand Tasting downtown full of beer only brewed in Florida? Take your pick--otherwise, we'll see you at all three!
Cheers,
Brown Specialty Team |

Meagan O'Brien sipped her beer and bit her tongue as the man next to her tried to describe to his date some of the 60 craft beers at a Milwaukee bar.
Turns out, he didn't know his ales from his hefeweizens.
"She kept asking questions, and this guy just kept making up stuff," O'Brien said.
O'Brien, 31, could have set him straight easily. A sales representative for Tallgrass, a craft beer brewed in Kansas, she's also a certified cicerone -- kind of a sudsy version of a sommelier.

As Craft Beer Gets Bigger, Will It Become More Like Big Beer? Or Perhaps Wine?
By : Brad Tuttle, Time Magazine
After another year of huge growth, it's clear that craft beer is big business-perhaps too big, or at least too snobby. The Brewers Association, which represents "small" American breweries that produce less than six million barrels annually, proudly announced that craft beer had a terrific 2012. Across the board, craft beer numbers were up: 18% more breweries in the U.S., 15% more beer produced by volume, a 17% increase in sales, and a whopping rise of 72% in American craft beer exports. Overall, beer sales by volume increased just 1% in 2012. Sales of traditional mass-produced beer in the U.S. have basically remained flat for several years, giving the impression that if consumers are drinking more beer, they're probably turning to craft beverages. Drinkers even seem to be shying away from the usual beer options on chug-happy holidays like St. Patrick's Day, when beer sales declined by 4% over the weekend at bars, compared to last year. Dissecting The Craft Beer Consumer: A Look at What An Awesome Beer Drinker Looks Like
By: Carl Pierre
The 2013 Craft Beer Conference is in full swing here at the Washington Convention Center, and with the country's greatest brewers congregating under one roof, you better believe that some pretty interesting insider knowledge is getting passed around. One of the more interesting lectures I had the privilege of attending during today's conference sessions was "The Who, What, Where, When and How of the Craft Beer Consumer", a discussion led by Danny Brager on the relevant statistics and trends of the craft beer drinker.

Featured Cocktail:
Summer Hoedown
Ingredients:
- 1 (6-pound) seedless watermelon, rind removed and cut into large dice
- 2 tblsp granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup maraschino liqueur, preferably Luxardo
- 4 (12-ounce) bottles white beer, such as Cigar City Florida Cracker, Avery White Rascal, or Crazy Mountain Lava Lake chilled
Instructions:
Set a fine-mesh strainer over a large bowl; set aside.
Place half of the watermelon in a blender and blend until liquified, about 1 minute.
Pour through the strainer into the bowl and scrape a rubber spatula against the inside surface of the strainer to push the juice through until only pulp remains.
Discard the pulp and set the strainer back over the bowl. Repeat with the remaining watermelon. (You should
have about 6 cups of juice.)
Add the sugar to the juice and stir until dissolved, about 2 minutes. Refrigerate until chilled, about 1 1/2 hours, or until ready to use.
When ready to serve, transfer the chilled juice to a 3-quart container. Add the maraschino liqueur and beer and stir gently to combine.

Beer and Bacon Mancakes By: Betty Crocker
Yield: 6 servings Level: Easy Ingredients:
- 1/2lb bacon (8 slices)
- 1/3 cup packed brown sugar - 2 cups Original Bisquick® mix - 1 cup of a Honey Brown, Peak Nut Brown, or another flavorful brown ale of your choice - 2 eggs
1.) Heat oven to 350°F. Line cookie sheet with foil. Place wire rack on top of cookie sheet. Arrange bacon in single layer on top of rack. Bake 10 minutes.
2.) Sprinkle bacon with half the brown sugar. Bake 10 minutes longer. Turn bacon over; sprinkle with remaining brown sugar. Bake 10 to 15 minutes longer or until golden brown. Remove from rack. Cool completely, about 15 minutes. Crumble bacon into small pieces; set aside.
3.) Heat griddle or skillet over medium-high heat or electric griddle to 375°F; grease with vegetable oil or shortening.
