2013 Craft Beer Projections
We have a lot of exciting things coming up for craft beer drinkers that will keep on growing ever year. For the first time last year we had our very own Florida beer weeks full of special local craft beer events in South Florida, Tampa, and Jacksonville to be among the other nation's cities' big beer weeks. This year is going to be even bigger and better. More details will be posted as the week's events build, but for now, mark these dates on your calendar:
South Florida Beer Week - January 19 - 26th
Tampa Bay Beer Week - March 2 - 9th
Jacksonville Beer Week - April 1 - 6th
American Craft Beer Week - May 13 - 19th
Oh, and can't forget this...
Cigar City Hunaphu Day - March 9th
A lot of incredible beer dinners, tap takeovers, brewery nights, giveaways, and all sorts of fun craft beer events are in the works for 2013.
As for the beer in 2013? We know we can count on our favorite year-round and flagship brews, get re-excited for the once a year seasonals, and drink at our local tap rooms, and best of all, find out what our breweries have up their sleeve for any new brews they have created or beers that we get in Florida for the first time. We know that the more experimenting, the more creative styles come out as well as new local Florida breweries that pop-up and join Drink like a local. We also know that the demand in craft beer is higher than ever. So keep on drinking what you're drinking, trying new styles, and perfecting your homebrew, as we continue to spread the word of good craft beer in Florida.
Cheers, Brown Specialty Team

Ommegang Biere D'Hougoumont
Our Limited Edition Biere d' Hougoumont is brewed with traditional French ale yeast, eight malts, French Strisselspalt hops, and aged on white oak and hard maple wooden staves. A traditional Biere De Garde style, this malty French-style farmhouse ale is brewed to be aged. The name honors the Hougoumont farmstead at the pivotal center of the Waterloo battlefield. Napoleon repeatedly failed to take the fortification, he then lost the battle and "met his Waterloo." 7.3% ABV

Narragansett Bock
A traditional Bavarian helles lager beer brewed to bock strength, therefore still as strong as traditional bock, but lighter in color and with more hop presence. Brewed in small batches. It is a deeply flavorful beer with a rich golden color and a full body. It is drier, hoppier, and slightly more bitter than a traditional bock, but still with a relatively low hop flavor. It offers an extremely approachable craft experience. The beer pours well, producing a large creamy, persistent white head, and moderate carbonation. Despite its full body, the flavor is not overly malty and delivers an elegant spicy character from the hops that produces a balanced, smooth finish. 6.5% ABV

Magic Hat Pistil Dandelion Beer
Pistil is a spring beer unlike any other, brewed with a combination of dandelion petals, Pale and Acidulated malts, flaked oats, and Apollo and Northern Brewer hops that results in a one-of-a-kind beer with a slightly sour acidity and a smooth malt body. Perfect for taking down deep thirst. 4.5% ABV

Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout Bottles Dark & delicious, America's great milk stout will change your perception about what a stout can be. Pouring hard out of the bottle, Milk Stout Nitro cascades beautifully, building a tight, thick head like hard whipped cream. The aroma is of brown sugar and vanilla cream, with hints of roasted coffee. The pillowy head coats your upper lip and its creaminess entices your palate. Initial roasty, mocha flavors rise up, with slight hop & roast bitterness in the finish. The rest is pure bliss of milk chocolate fullness. For how to pour hard, watch this video of one poured at the brewery. 6.0% ABV

2012 Specialty Beers: The Oz of Beers
By Tom Sulinski
You don't need to be caught in a tornado to be brought to a new place where the landscape is suddenly unfamiliar and strange - it's already in your backyard, my friend. No Dorothy, no Tin-Man and certainly no Wicked Witch necessary, this strange place is in a bottle. While the familiar saying of "There's no place like home" is often true, don't go clicking your heals just yet. Far removed from the Reinheitsgebot, "specialty beers" begin with the familiar hops, water, malt, and yeast recipe and then quickly add everything in the cupboard to the kettle. Coffee, herbs, spices 'a' plenty blended with non-traditional aging techniques and sometimes a wild yeast only begin to define these beers. Grab your favorite glass because we're certainly not in Kansas anymore.
Ranging from sickly sweet to delightfully dry, fruit has been a longtime favorite of many brewers. Not for novice brewers, finding balance and true fruit representation in these beers can be surprisingly difficult...

Pizza Beer? Chicago-Area Brewers Combine Two Of The Best Things Ever
By: Huffington Post
Pizza and beer, a power couple America can believe in.
Leave it to the Chicago area to somehow find a way to combine pizza and beer and make the end result not simply drinkable, but increasingly in-demand.
Tom and Athena Seefurth's Mamma Mia! Pizza Beer has already landed the Campton Township, Ill. brewers mentions on Jay Leno, "The Today Show" and much more and -- in the new year -- it's about to hit the shelves at Jewel-Osco stores in two Chicago suburbs, South Elgin and St. Charles, in the new year, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
All the attention is a far cry from the the bizarre ale's humble, home-brew beginnings in 2006. As the brewers' website explains: "It all started with a surplus of tomatoes, a bag of garlic & an idea that started early in the spring when we planted our garden herbs."

Trouble Brewing: The Craft Beer Vs. 'Crafty' Beer Cat Fight
By: Brad Tuttle
Tired of watching mainstream beer sales fall while the craft beer craze soared, large international companies like MillerCoors and Anheuser-Busch InBev have hijacked the playbook of small, independent brewers. The results are faux "crafty" beers like Blue Moon and Shock Top, which appear to be created by smalltime operations, while actually being produced by the world's largest brewers. Naturally, the authentic little guys aren't pleased.
In 2011, total beer sales fell by 1.3% by volume in the U.S. Craft beer sales, however, rose by 13%. So-called "crafty" beers owned by mass-market brewers also fared well: Blue Moon sales increased 21% year-over-year.
While mom-and-pop brewers generally earn their reputations as laidback types-often starting businesses in their basement, with the help and advice of other brewers-they've taken great umbrage recently over the muddling of the craft beer market.
