Our Students Need Your Voice to Be Heard!
Please Read Below & Act Today!

On December 28, NJ Education Commissioner David Hespe will rule on a request that will seriously impact Catholic schools throughout the State by separating public schools from non-public schools for state-wide athletic competition in football and wrestling (for now!)  This does not just affect student athletes, but impacts all students, families and alumni who enjoy Holy Spirit Football and Wrestling!

The burden is especially heavy on South Jersey Catholic schools. The proposals require families (plus cheerleaders, student body, alumni and fans) to bear an unjust burden by forcing them into excessive time and expense to travel greater distances more frequently to attend a child or friend's school athletic events.

On December 16, the New Jersey Catholic Conference and all the Bishops in New Jersey petitioned the Commissioner to reject Ballot Proposals 1 and 4 (detail below) presented for his review by the NJSIAA (New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association).

The Bishops further believe these proposals are just the start of this effort to separate public school and non-public schools in all sports programs. This could exacerbate the negative effect on schools and destroy long standing traditions of healthy competition that have benefited generations of student-athletes throughout the State and especially here in South Jersey.

We ask you to please contact Commissioner David Hespe directly as soon as possible. He will issue a ruling on December 28. Time is of the essence.

If you agree, please state that you join the New Jersey Bishops in maintaining that Ballot Proposal No. 1 and Ballot Proposal No. 4 are unfair to non-public schools. Both proposals would negatively impact non-public school participation in the NJSIAA.
Therefore, we respectfully request that he reject both of these proposals.

Important Detail on Ballot Proposal No. 1 and No. 4
Ballot Proposal No. 1 would separate wrestlers from public and non-public schools at the district and regional tournament levels. Ballot Proposal No. 4 would create a separate state-wide football conference for non-public schools. These proposals would be disastrous for Catholic schools throughout the State, as they would impede already successful competition between public and non-public schools on a local and conference level, dramatically increase our transportation costs by forcing us to travel much longer distances in order to schedule games across the varsity and sub-varsity spectrum, and possibly lead to the elimination of programs in some schools. This would have a negative impact on Catholic school students and families seeking athletic scholarships.
