Inspiration Abounds

The 2013 Iron Girl Rocky Gap Triathlon was filled with inspiration. Indeed, each woman competing overcame personal obstacles and challenges to toe the starting line.

Congratulations to Allison Nederveld, who successfully completed her Iron Girl journey.  Here is her inspirational story.

At the age of 28, Allison was  250 pounds and could barely walk up a flight of stairs due to severe knee pain. Being "fit" seemed pretty impossible. Allison started to track food and go for long walks around her neighborhood. A few months later, she decided to work towards running a 5k, which she did! A friend then convinced her to register for an all women's sprint triathlon.

When Allison was in grad school, several of the guys in the lab were all doing a triathlon together. She tried to get some of them to form a relay team so she could participate, but they all saw her as too out of shape. Her professor actually said to her face that there was no way she could ever do that race, even one leg of it. Feeling so beat down at that point, Allison internalized that message and made it her reality. But now, she had someone telling her the opposite. "I could do more than just one leg - I could do the whole thing! I began to get so excited. I broke the race down into parts. I knew I could complete each leg. I knew I could complete the race. And THAT became my reality." Completing the triathlon became her reality.

A year after starting her journey to better health, Allison completed her first sprint triathlon. She was still around 200 pounds and she walked most of the run portion, but accomplished her goal, completing the race in just under 2 hours. It's been 2 years since that race, but it changed her life. Allison can now run a 10k, do 20 push-ups, is just a few pounds from reaching her goal of a healthy BMI, and has completed her second triathlon at Iron Girl Rocky Gap. Friends gave her the accountability and support she needed to start this journey. But running and triathlons have given Allison fitness goals that keep her motivated to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Knowing that she can run 3 miles, even on her worst days is the most inspirational tool she has ever had at her disposal. Knowing that she can, and has, completed something that she was told was impossible has boosted her confidence and pushes her daily to work even harder.

Congratulations to Allison, and to all participants whose courage and determination to overcome obstacles inspire us all!
