Shane Lauer Crosses The EagleMan Finish Line Assisted by ASA
Congratulations to Shane Lauer who crossed the Ironman 70.3 EagleMan finish line thanks to the extraordinary efforts of Athletes Serving Athletes. Over the last 5 years, Lauer has competed in numerous multisport events, including 7 full marathons, two sprint triathlons, 6 olympic distance triathlons and four half Ironman distance triathlons. At the 2012 and 2013 Columbia Triathlon Lauer took first place in the para-triathlete division and qualified for the Hyvee 5150 National Championship in Des Moines, Iowa. Lauer made the trek to Iowa and competed against the best in the country and took third place in his category. To top off the year Lauer became the first athlete EVER living with Duchene's muscular dystrophy to finish a full ultra-distance triathlon at Chesapeake Man in September. It took Lauer 15 ½ hours to complete the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run.
For any athlete this is a substantial accomplishment, but Shane Lauer is not just any athlete. His determination and love for the sport are amazing. Lauer competed with the assistance of a team of dedicated athlete volunteers from the non-profit organization Athletes Serving Athletes (ASA) that included Chip Connor, David Slomkowski and Ben Mortenson. Connor, from Glen Arm, MD is director of Melalueca Wellness Company and towed Shane in a custom designed harness and raft during the swimming leg of the race. Slomkowski, of Timonium, the Founder and Executive Director of ASA biked with Shane in a specialized bicycle and Mortenson, also Shane's legal guardian, and director of Young Life Capernaum, pushed Shane across the finish line in a custom built racing jogger.
"Shane is a really competitive kid," said Mortenson. Several years ago he and Shane competed in a four-mile race. "With two miles to go, Shane kept saying 'Ben, you need to pick up the speed and pass these people ...I can't move my body, but I can move my mouth!'"
MORE about ASA
Congratulations to all EagleMan competitors who raced for a cause! Charity teams competing at EagleMan this year included, Athletes Serving Athletes, Team Don't Panic, Team Conquer Cancer, Team Embrace, Team Fight, Team PVA, Team Inspiration, Team Little Things 4 Cancer, TNT, and Team WIN-THE-FIGHT.
