Inspiration Was Plentiful at the 2013 Columbia Triathlon
The 2013 Columbia Triathlon was filled with inspiration. Participants and spectators honored TriColumbia's retired founder, Robert Vigorito, for his 30 years of contributions to TriColumbia and to the sport of triathlon, and athletes welcomed him as a first time fellow competitor at this hallmark event which he has nurtured for so many years.
Athletes enjoyed hearing from world class pros, Cameron Dye, Leanda Cave, Bevan Docherty and Meredith Kessler at the Pro Meet & Greet, and competing alongside nearly 40 of the world's best professional triathletes. Cameron Dye defended his 2012 title, while blazing fast, Nicky Samuels of New Zealand smashed the course, bike and run records!
Nearly 2,000 endurance athletes, ages 17 - 76, representing 30 states and 8 countries, participated in the race
Two star studded Special Olympics relay teams sponsored by Team Embrace competed. Team Syd showcased Syd Lea who has raced in 7 countries, is a 7 time Special Olympic World Games Gold Medalist in cycling, and is the 2011 World Champion of the Road and Time Trial for athletes with intellectual disability. Andy Miyares, the swimmer holds 16 World Records for Downe Syndrome Aquatics Athletes and won one gold, two silver and one bronze medal at the 2007 Special Olympics WORLD GAMES in China. Mark Worley, the runner has won more gold medals than anyone can count at Special Olympic Track and Cross Country events, and won the bronze medal at the 2012 World Indoor Rowing Championships.
Charity teams raced to raise awareness and funds to support their causes. Teams competing this year included Team Embrace, Team Fight, Team Inspiration, Team Little Things 4 Cancer, Team WIN-THE-FIght, Athletes Serving Athletes, and TNT representing the race beneficiary, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Maryland Chapter. Thank you for helping us make a difference in the lives of those in need.
Join Us at Another 2013 TriColumbia Event
There's still time to sign up for another 2013 TriColumbia event. Races still open include:
- Celebrating Heroes - June 23rd. Join us at this sprint triathlon as we celebrate and applaud the spirit of the American Hero. TriColumbia salutes the many heroes that make our nation great; from wounded warriors, rescue workers and first responders to everyday unsung heroes who go out of their way to selflessly lend a hand to provide hope and help to those in need. Join the waiting list soon and a slot will be released to you.
- TriColumbia Kidz Triathlon - July 21st. Get your kids off the couch this summer to experience a healthy, fit lifestyle in a fun, family-friendly environment.
- The Iron Girl Rocky Gap Triathlon - September 8th - This sprint triathlon provides a platform for women to challenge themselves to be the best they can be in a pristine mountain setting. Women agree that there's nothing quite as empowering as an Iron Girl event.
- The ChesapeakeMan Endurance Festival - September 21st. Taking place in Cambridge, MD, the same venue as TriColumbia's world renown Ironman 70.3 Eagleman Triathlon, this festival offers 7 great events to challenge all ability levels. Events include the Ultra Distance USAT Mid-Atlantic Championship event named by Triathlete Magazine as a "140.6 Best", the Skipjack 75.2, Aquabike, Bugeye Classic International Distance, SwimFest, 10 mile run and a Moonlight Marathon. You wont want to miss this event that takes place amid the beautiful Blackwater Wildlife Refuge when the heat of the summer has faded.
