2012 Athleta Iron Girl Columbia logo Like you, we at TriColumbia remain shocked and saddened by the tragic events at the 2013 Boston Marathon, and offer our deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones or who have been injured. We stand in solidarity with the entire endurance race community in honoring of those affected by continuing to embrace and celebrate life though multisport . TriColumbia is working with Police and Emergency Management Services to address additional security measures and procedures for the Athleta Iron Girl Half Marathon & Coed 5K.    


Race Day is less than 2 weeks away on Sunday, April 28, 2013, and preparations are being finalized to make your day great! We hope that you have enjoyed every minute of your journey toward the finish line; gaining strength, confidence and celebrating your unique grace as you have trained.

Please read the important information in this email, and remember to download the 2013 Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Half Marathon & Coed 5K Athlete's Guide, and other resources located on the TriColumbia Iron Girl Columbia Half Marathon webpage under "Key Race Info" and "Resources" to address questions or concerns you may have. This year, there is a new course and start/finish/celebration village area, so be sure to check out the 2013 maps also under Key Race Info.


Remember to pick up your race packet and enjoy the Athleta Iron Girl Half Marathon Health & Fitness Expo on Friday August 26th, or Saturday August 27th at the Sheraton Columbia Town Center Hotel.  


If you need to speak to TriColumbia Staff on race day, please go to the TriColumbia Information Tent located in the Athleta Iron Girl Half Marathon Village.

Important Race Information

Race day parking is available at The Mall in Columbia, just across Little Patuxent Parkway from the Start/Finish Line and Celebration Village, as well as in the Medstar parking lot and Sheraton Parking Garage adjacent to the Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Celebration Village.  Parking in the Medstar Lot and Sheraton Garage can only be accessed via Wincopin Circle as Sterrett Place will be closed to vehicular traffic.

Little Patuxent Parkway Eastbound from Sterrett Place to South Entrance Road will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning at approximately 6:45 am until runners have cleared Little Patuxent Parkway at South Entrance Road. Arrive at the venue located in the parking lot adjacent to the Medstar Health Building (5565 Sterrett Place) and just NW of the Sheraton Columbia Town Center Hotel (10207 Wincopin Circle, Columbia, MD 21044) by 6:30 am. Please allow plenty of time to park and walk to the venue.

Athletes may self-select a pacing group lead by the Under Armour Pacers. Look for pace signs at the start area.  Pacing groups will run at 9 different speeds in order to finish with total running times between 1:45 and 2:35.

Please note that there is NO RACE DAY CHECK-IN/PACKET PICKUP. All registered entrants, including all relay team members, MUST attend packet pickup on Friday or Saturday in person. Each participant MUST pick up her/his own packet. All participants must bring a photo ID to packet pickup.

Enjoy browsing the Health & Fitness Expo featuring many vendors offering the latest in running and health related gear and products. Dr. Raymond Infanti and Dr. Patricia DeNardo from Chiro 1st Chiropractic are certified in Active Release Technique, Graston Technique and Kinesio Taping, and will be providing these services at the expo on April 27th. They can also answer any other injury questions you may have!

Pre & Post Race Gear/Clothing Drop

Prior to running, you may drop-off your pre-race/post-race clothing and belongings (stored in the bag supplied to you at packet pick up) at the Gear Check area near the TriColumbia Information Tent at the Celebration Village.

Be sure to label your gear bag with your race number. While you run, your gear will be held at the TriColumbia Gear Check, but please be advised that we are not responsible for any lost or stolen items. DO NOT leave valuables, cash or jewelry in your gear bag.

After you finish the event, visit the Gear Check area to pick up your bag. You must be wearing the wristband given to you when dropping off your bag to retrieve your bag. Gear bags must be claimed by 11:00 am.

Post Race Victory Celebration

Safeway Logo After crossing the 1/2 Marathon finish line, you will be presented with a beautiful finisher's medal, and are invited to proceed to the Celebration Village to enjoy refreshments located in the Athlete's Food Tent presented by Safeway.

BodyMasons TriColumbia will provide complementary massages on a first come, first served basis. The Massage Tent will be located in the Iron Girl 1/2 Marathon Village, with sports massages executed by BodyMason Performance Therapy.

The Awards Ceremony will begin at approximately 10:30 am at the post race celebration.

For those who have taken the Titanium Girl Challenge to complete both the Athleta Iron Girl 1/2 Marathon and the Frederick Running Festival 1/2 Marathon within 1 week, your medal will be available for you post race at the Frederick Running Festival.  Race staff will have a list of Athleta Iron Girl 1/2 Marathon finishers. However, please bring your Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Finishers Medal with you to expedite receipt of your Titanium Girl Medal.

Pick Up Your Pre-Ordered 2013 Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Bead

If you have pre-ordered a 2013 Athleta Iron Girl Columbia commemorative bead, please visit the EnduraFit tent for pick up. There will also be additional decorative beads for purchase at the event.
Some Rules To Follow
  • The time limit for runners to complete the half marathon is 3 hours and 40 minutes after the start. (approximately a 16 minute/mile pace). Athletes must reach the mid point aid station by 9 am. Those who do not do so will be transported back to the finish line.
  • All athletes are required to wear race numbers at all times during the run. Numbers must face the front and be clearly visible at all times. Numbers may not be cut or folded or altered in any way. DO NOT transfer your number to any other athlete or take a number from an athlete that is not competing.
  • The use of baby joggers or strollers is not permitted.
  • The responsibility of knowing and following the prescribed course rests with each participant.
  • Pets, skateboards, roller skates, and bicycles are not allowed on the course.  

Regarding the use of personal music devices:


The use of personal music devices is strongly discouraged at this race. To enjoy all that our race has to offer and for the safety of all participants, TriColumbia encourages a headphone-free environment during
the running of The Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Half Marathon & Coed 5K.


We believe your race experience and those around you will be greatly enhanced by leaving the headphones at home or in the car. Running headphone-free allows opportunities to develop camaraderie with your fellow runners and to enjoy everything the race has to offer. Plus, volunteers and spectators will be on course cheering you on and providing directions to help get you to the finish line.


Runner safety has always been, and will continue to be, a top priority for our event. Please be mindful of the other participants and respect the race personnel to ensure a safe and enjoyable race for everyone.

PLEASE respect both the environment and the areas that this event travels through.  Do not drop trash anywhere other than aid stations and use the portable toilets, not the neighborhoods. We encourage you to use trash receptacles and to take your trash with you when you leave the venue in order to protect the environment.

And don't forget to thank the many enthusiastic volunteers stationed throughout the race course and venue.  Our volunteers are comprised of many charity and community groups as well as individuals who simply enjoy helping out. An Inspirational Story From One of Our Participants

Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center Logo TriColumbia is proud to produce The Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Half Marathon & Coed 5K to benefit the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center, Howard County General Hospital's resource to assist those living and coping with cancer. Please take the time to read a personal story recently submitted by Diana Toronto, Iron Girl athlete, cancer survivor, Team Conquer member, and patient at the center.

"On May 14, 2013 I will celebrate my anniversary.... Five years since the surgery to remove the malignant tumor in my right breast. Surgery was followed by chemotherapy, radiation, revision surgery, and ongoing oral medication.
I had just turned 40 and was nursing my 3rd child.  Thankfully I had the notion to perform a self-exam one night as I had not yet had a mammogram.
Now, at the age of 45 and finally feeling fully recovered, I am happy, healthy, and moving forward with my life plans.
One of the key factors in my healing process is exercise. I never stopped - you'd see me, bald, outside running, at the gym, at my favorite "boot camp" class, at the pool, and active in my kids' sports. I admit, there were some days I couldn't make it up off the couch, but I so desperately wanted to feel like myself again, and being active was a part of my life.

One year after diagnosis I participated in my first triathlon as the runner in a relay team. The next year I did the whole thing!  The following year, I completed three triathlons. And this year I am attempting the "triple crown" -  the Iron Girl Half Marathon, Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon, and Rocky Gap Triathlon.

I am a breast cancer survivor, but that is not what defines me. I used the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center services. I am a member of Team Conquer Cancer.  I am strong, positive, and motivated. I make the most of every day and cherish every moment I have with my family. I celebrate life."

Often participants become involved in endurance events as a way to overcome an obstacle, cope with a loss, provide a role model, forward a cause, or as a way to change their lives for the better. Gatorade Endurance Formula is a specialized sports drink designed to sustain hydration during prolonged training and racing when fluid and electrolyte losses can be significant and will be served along the Athleta Iron Girl Half Marathon & 5K course.
