Preparing For Baby's Arrival
Bringing a new baby home is exciting and full of unexpected surprises, sounds and schedules. As new parents we spend months planning and preparing for the new baby's arrival. Below are tips to include the family dog in your preparation plans.
> Put a little dab of baby shampoo or lotion on a blanket and let your dog adapt to a new baby's scents.
> Turn the swing on or move the stroller around while you feed your dog treats to get her used to these large moving objects.
> When arriving home with your new baby in a car seat, have someone walk in front of you so your dog does not jump at the car seat.
> Don't introduce your dog to the baby when you walk in the door, and don't put your baby on the floor. Act like you're returning from a regular errand, as this reduces the dog's anxiety.
> Introduce the two by putting the baby in the car seat and placing it on the table. Let your dog sniff the car seat.
> Include your dog in daily infant care. Use treats and verbal praise when your dog is calm around the baby.
> NO matter how trustworthy you think your dog may be, never leave your child alone with her - even for a minute. Always supervise, supervise, supervise.
