Tips to Keep your Pets Safe
1) Large Appliances - Close lids to dryers and dishwashers so your pet won't get caught hiding in them.
2) Kitchen Counters - Counter-surfing can lead to your pet eating harmful foods such as chocolate or onions.
3) Hot Surfaces - Pets can easily burn themselves on hot plates, stovetops or electric grills.
4) Detergents and Cleaners - Install child proof devices to low cupboards to prevent pets from getting into chemicals.
5) Rodent and Insect Repellents - Put mouse bait, mothballs, and insect traps only in areas where your pet cannot access them.
6) Furniture - Fold out pieces of furniture, such as recliners and sofa beds or rocking chairs can trap and injure your pet.
7) Electrical Wires - Loose electrical cords can be chewed on causing mouth burns or electrocution.
8) Flames - Paws and whiskers can be burned and hair singed if a pet walks too close to a candle.
9) Blinds, Drapes and Curtains - Shorten or eliminate blind or drape cords to eliminate the possibility of strangulation.
10) Plants and Flowers - Be aware of toxic plants as pets like to chew on the leaves. Easter lilies are deadly to cats.
11) Water - Keep your pet away from the pool unless supervised to avoid an accidental drowning.
12) Medications - Pills dropped on the floor or left on the counter can be life threatening.
13) Antifreeze and Paint - Tightly recap bottles to avoid accidental exposure. A tiny amount of anti freeze is deadly.
14) Fishing lures - Getting "caught" with a barbed hook often requires a trip to the veterinarian.
15) Windows - Make sure window screens are secure so pets can't fall from upper story windows or escape from a lower story one.
16) Sewing Needle and Thread - Sewing
needle in one of our own patients - Tyrone the Pug. He had it surgically removed and no longer helps his mom sew.
