Thank you to all the members and their employees for contacting our senators and representatives asking them to pass a long-term transportation bill. While the house did not consider H.R. 22, the Developing a Reliable and Innovative Vision for the Economy (DRIVE) Act, they did pass a three month extension. Senator McCain voted for the bill and Senator Flake voted against. Click here for the vote detail. Also, Senator McCain penned this op-ed in the Arizona Capitol Times making it clear that 35 short-term extensions since 2009 is unacceptable. He says, "It is past time to break this trend and move our nation's infrastructure forward with a responsible and thoughtful policy." Kudos to Senator McCain. |

AZAGC Supports Governor's Proposal to Increase Registration Fees to Fund the Highway Patrol |
Last legislative session, Governor Doug Ducey's proposed budget included a proposal to authorize the Director of the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to establish the amount of the vehicle registration fee. It was expected that the fee would initially be increased from $8.00 to $16.00 and the proceeds would be dedicated to funding the Highway Patrol of the Department of Public Safety.
Vehicles can be registered annually, bi-annually or for five years. The cost of registration is the same regardless of length of time. According to ADOT, annual registrations are 3,613,553, bi-annual are 1,376,733 and five year are 308,202. It was estimated at the time, that the expected fee increase would generate approximately $42,387,904 in fiscal year 2016.
AZAGC supports Governor Ducey's proposal to authorize the Director of the Department of Transportation to establish the amount of the vehicle registration fee and the expected increase in the fee of $8.00. |

AZAGC Strategic Planning Participants Focus on Statewide Infrastructure Funding |
At the meeting, Tom Johnson, President and CEO of the Texas AGC, gave a comprehensive overview of their success with the Texas legislature. He was very clear that these efforts take a considerable amount of time and money. With this in mind, the strategic planning participants decided to organize an ad hoc committee to create short-term and long-term strategy to address the need to protect and seek additional funding for infrastructure, along with a sustained educational outreach effort. They directed the committee to consider an initiative or referendum to protect the Vehicle License Tax (VLT) and a mechanism to increase funding; create and budget a short-term and long-term communications plan to support these efforts; research the current distribution of existing funding streams and alternatives; and poll the electorate on a variety of issues. |
