An Interview with Jerry Miller, Vice President
Ames Constrution, Inc. was founded in the summer of 1962 and incorporated on July 10,1963The board of directors and owners include: Richard Ames, Raymond Ames, Dennis McGill, and Michael Kellen. Ames Construction, Inc. is a national company headquartered in Burnsville, MN, with a local office in Scottsdale and a shop in Phoenix. The company has been a member of AZAGC for 28 years.
What does your company do:

JM: Heavy Civil and Mining Contractor; self perform earthwork and excavation, structures, underground and pipe installation.

Why are you a member of AZAGC?
JM: We recognize the importance of industry collaboration to support the advancement of construction in Arizona and the nation. AZAGC is a great venue to partner with other contractors and agencies to set the foundation for the growth of our economy and the infrastructure needs to support that growth.
What awards have you or your company received?
JM: We have received several AZ Partnering Excellence in Transportation Awards, three Marvin M. Black awards, many AGC safety awards including 2011 Safety Professional of the Year (Tom Howard).
How does your company help others in the community?

JM: Through the generous efforts of Sharon and John Ames and Ames Construction, Inc., the riders  at Camelot Therapeutic Horsemanship have a state-of-the-art facility complete with covered riding arena (footing funded by Ames Construction and Thunderbirds Charities). Sharon, John and Ames employees have all devoted their time to maintaining and improving the facility. The firm also donates a significant amount of time and funds to the Arizona Boys and Girls Club all year long.

John and Sharon Ames also open their home each year to several youth groups for Christmas parties. John rents carnival rides, employees dress up as Mr. and Mrs. Clause and cook dinner for the kids, and each child goes home with a gift. Groups included the 4th grade from a Phoenix elementary school in a low income neighborhood, a group from the Boys and Girls Club, a group from Camelot, and others.

What message would you say to folks to be successful in this industry?

JM: Ames Construction started as a small, family-run business that served its community. Today it is a large, family-run business that serves a nation. Yet, when you look at our 50-year history, you will find that our success is less about building a business than it is about building relationships and working together to do our best for the customer. It is about being persistent - never giving up - and always finding a way to say "yes" to an opportunity.

What else would you like to share with the members of AGC?

JM:  "A successful job is one where everyone returns home safely at the end of the day." - John Ames
