Ames Suites Awarded LEED Gold Certification
The newly constructed Jesse H. Ames Suites at UWRF has been awarded the prestigious LEED-NC v2009 Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. SDS Architects, along with their consultants and general contractor, worked closely with campus throughout the design and construction process to employ a wide range of rigorous sustainable design and construction strategies that led to the award of this certification for high performance and environmentally responsible projects. Materials used in the construction of the facility contained more than 16% recycled materials, 25% of the materials used were regionally harvested, and 70% of the wood used was Forestry Stewardship Council certified. The campus purchased Renewable Energy Certificates, which accounts for 70% of the energy the building consumes; low-flow plumbing fixtures resulted in a 42% water-use reduction; and rooftop solar hot water panels were installed as a water pre-heat strategy. These strategies result in nearly 32% annual reduction in energy usage and 27% savings in energy costs. Creative landscaping eliminates the need for a costly irrigation system. A boardwalk protects the wetland adjacent to the site and provides an interesting, interactive pedestrian circulation link to campus. |

Alumnus Cofounds Little Free Libraries
Since his graduation from UWRF in 1979 with a B.S. in education, psychology and sociology, Todd Bol has pursued a diverse professional life.
Bol served as a middle school instructor for five years before his career took a sharp turn into corporate bartering for several years until he ultimately became a successful entrepreneur moving into founding and operating several international businesses and non-profits.
While a student at UWRF, Bol participated in three separate international experiences and credits his exposure to traveling abroad as a student for his later professional international successes.
"You never really know who you are," said Bol, "until you see yourself through the eyes of someone else from another culture."
Among his many global achievements Bol is most widely known as a cofounder of Little Free Libraries (along with Rick Brooks). Little Free Libraries are small, handcrafted wooden boxes that follow the "take a book, leave a book model" and the placement of them in neighborhood communities has grown into an international movement. It all began in 2009 when Bol installed a library he built in his front yard and filled it with giveaway books as a tribute to his late mother
The organization has placed more than 6,000 Little Free Libraries in more than 36 countries. It also recently won a "Mover and Shakers" award from the American Library Association, two documentaries have featured them, and nearly 1,000 media publications have covered them in the past year.
Bol resides in Hudson where his Little Free Library workshop/headquarters is based.

Public Astronomy Talks and Observatory Viewings Bring Community to Campus
Free, public observatory viewings and astronomy talks hosted each semester by the UWRF Physics Department offer students and community members of all ages an opportunity to learn together.
The last talk/viewing this semester is Tuesday, April 16, at 8 p.m. with physics Professor Eileen Korenic's talk, "Gas Giant 5: The Solar System's Lost Planet," in Room 271 Centennial Science Hall. Telescope viewing (if the sky is clear) begins as 8:30 p.m. on the third floor observatory deck.
Visitors are advised to dress appropriately for the weather since the dome is unheated and the observation deck is outside open to the elements. The viewings and talks are suitable for all ages.
All observatory viewings are dependent on a clear sky. Call 715-425-3560 after 6 p.m. or visit www.uwrf.edu/PHYS/Schedule.cfm and click on "observatory" to verify that the sky is clear for viewing. The 8 p.m. talk will go on as scheduled regardless of the weather.
