UWRF Signs Partnership with China Agricultural University
UWRF, home to one of the largest undergraduate dairy science programs in the United States, signed a collaboration agreement with China Agricultural University (CAU), located in Beijing, during an event at the State Capitol in October.

Representatives from UWRF and CAU were joined by Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection Deputy Secretary Jeff Lyon, an alumnus of UWRF; and USDA Rural Development Director for Wisconsin Stan Gruszynski.
The new partnership results from meetings held in China in June as part of a DATCP visit to promote Wisconsin's rich dairy industry and related resources. More than 40 delegates from China traveled to Madison for the signing and the World Dairy Expo.
"Because of the high quality of both of our universities, and the strength we both have in agriculture programs, including dairy science, this agreement holds great promise for our students and faculty, the State of Wisconsin, China, and the global agriculture industry," said UW-River Falls Chancellor Dean Van Galen.

Cascade Avenue Redesigned
Cascade Avenue, the street between North and South halls, is back open after major reconstruction that closed the 70-year-old street in April.
Extensive work on the street included replacing aging underground utility infrastructure and sidewalks.
The new street is narrower with gentle curves, new brick pavers, thousands of landscaping plants, dozens of trees and new streetlights. The improvements provide better safety for pedestrians and vehicles since parking along the street is gone and the addition of two roundabouts keep traffic moving.
The multi-million dollar project required collaboration between city, university and state officials and agencies.

UWRF, Area High Schools Team Up in Mathematics Partnership Project
|
Erick Hofacker, assistant professor of mathematics at UWRF, is co-principal investigator for the grant.
|
Earlier this fall, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction awarded a $316,594 two-year grant to provide professional development for middle school and high school math teachers in western Wisconsin, preparing them for the upcoming implementation of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics. The main partners in the grant are UWRF and the Rice Lake Area School District. Additional partners include UW-Eau Claire and 12 other school districts in western Wisconsin. To date, 36 teachers are involved in the project. The project, funded by the grant, "Math Transition into the Common Core Era," held its kick-off meeting Oct. 20 in Rice Lake. "Each year of the grant we will provide approximately 100 hours of professional development that focuses on mathematical modeling and the practice standards, which will both be new areas of emphasis in state assessments," said Erick Hofacker, assistant professor of mathematics at UWRF and co-principal investigator for the grant.
