Santa Barbara Body Therapy Institute Newsletter
June 9, 2014

Greetings!

This week we have had an influx of seasoned body workers from Paso Robles and Ohio seeking to complete their training in order to pass the requirements of State Certification. At one time, 200 hours was considered a sufficient amount of training to commence ones practice. Many massage therapists such as myself, began their practice with 200 hours of training in massage. Those that were successful, gleaned the rest of the skills they needed to conduct a successful practice from the school of hard knocks or continuing education such as how to:

  • effectively address difficult clients
  • how to address assorted pain profiles
  • how to respond to arousal in the context of massage
  • how to individuate your massage to the clients presenting patterns
  • how to conduct a busy practice and not burn out from repetitive motion syndrome.
  • how to keep your immune system strong while working on the general public grappling with assorted pathogens

In SBBTI's Massage Practitioner Program, we address all of the above in our Ethics training and assorted massage courses. We train our graduates in 6 distinctly different approaches to massage as well as Ethics, Contraindications, Health and Hygiene, Anatomy, Physiology and Business.

Within the State of California, the local municipalities, such as Santa Barbara City are at choice when they choose to raise their minimum standards. For therapists living in Paso Robles the implementation of State Certification requirements came as a sudden shock. Practicing therapists with 200 hours of training are now scrambling to receive State Certification within the month. For 200hr Massage Technicians we offer 50 hours of continuing education in the form of short bodywork modules and Ethics or one week intensives, that integrate all of the State requirements into one week of training.

To all of our 200 hour grads we encourage you to be proactive  in completing your remaining 50 hours towards your 250. 250 hour State Certification is scheduled by law to sunset at the end of the year. Come 2015, all Certified 250 hour Massage Practitioners will be recognized as State Certified and all practitioners seeking State Certification will be required to complete 500 hours of training.

Whether you are a seasoned professional or a newbie wanting to get your toes wet and take a short module, or get a student session, we invite you to join us in the classroom or clinic.

Peace and Ease be with you,

KTKatie Mickey

"The knowledge shared, hospitality, love and support I received at BTI has gone way beyond my expectations. I didn't know what it would be like when I came. I had a great time and was also happy the school was open to accommodate my licensing needs."
