Jordan Terry,
Spa Deep Tissue Course
"My approach to Spa Deep Tissue is to offer a Kata or framework that addresses the tension patterns experienced by the majority of people. Once learned, students can make the kata their own. The course defines what Spa Deep tissue means to clients and therapists and hones student's capacity to offer a full body session in our hour. As instructor I seek to create classroom setting where we all are teacher and students collectively giving and sharing. "

Greetings!
Back in the day when I started working as a massage technician, there were not many employment opportunities available. I landed a great job right after graduation as an independent contractor for the Sheraton Health Spa as well as received referral for the Double Tree, San Ysidro Ranch, the Biltmore and El Encanto. I can unequivocally say my days in the Spa setting were a great launching pad for my career. I got to know lots of bodies, build my confidence in the techniques I had learned and develop my stamina for sustained work.
Self sustaining employment in massage is the strong motivator for most students who join us in the classroom at the Santa Barbara Body Therapy Institute.
Three key ingredients that I hear from our successful grads in fulfilling that dream:
- Having a strong grounding in our 250 hour Massage Practitioner Program
- Studying and developing some form of Deep Tissue Massage
- Employment straight out of school in a local spa for confidence and skill building.
In light of those goals I am most pleased to announce new opportunities for SBBTI students and grads. Massage Envy is now offering job placement for SBBTI grads following certification.

And to help students prepare for employment we offer this special course, Spa Deep Tissue, designed to teach students to deliver solid deep tissue techniques while exercising proper body mechanics. We give students the ingredients to achieve optimal success in their massage careers.

Jordan Terry Shares his thoughts on Spa Employment
"My perspective in working at Massage Envy after graduating from SBBTI's 250 program while continuing to study in the 550 program, was that I had a paid internship- I got paid to get experience working with 2,000 bodies. So that when someone asked "How do you know what was going on with that tissue?" I had the experience to know.
Working at Massage Envy, you can have wonderful relationships with your clients, have a full schedule booked up in advance. Booking the sessions, charging cancellation fees, providing the space -you can count all of that as part of your pay -cause you don't have to do it.
Students who finish the 250 program can start working at Massage Envy right away, continue their 550 program, and practice what they learn in the classroom immediately and get paid to do it. My experience was that as long as my clients were in agreement, I could implement any form of massage. The ability to take a class and implement the new moves I just learned to four clients the next day was fantastic - creating neural pathways from book knowledge to kinesthetic knowledge immediately.
A year and a half ago, I stepped out of the spa world into Orthopedic massage at the Deep Tissue Massage Center, www.dtmcsb.com. There I continued to gain experience and was able to work closely with people to facilitate change and educate people about their bodies. I helped to facilitate changes for clients after they set goals towards what they wished to experience, such as pain free life, or increased range of motion.
Last fall, I stepped back into the classroom at SBBTI as Spa Deep Tissue Instructor. I advise students to maintain a perspective on their long term goal, while working at Massage Envy- work on 1,000-2,000 bodies, then reevaluate where you want to be. That is what my wife Aeon and I did. After two years at Massage Envy we opened our own practice. Now are self sustaining, autonomous and still growing personally and professionally."

The graduates that come out of Santa Barbara Body Therapy Institute are the most well-rounded, possess the best techniques and draping of all the graduates from schools in the Tri-Counties."
