Santa Barbara Body Therapy Institute Newsletter  February 5, 2013

   students     Greetings!

I am pleased to announce new opportunities for SBBTI students and past grads for 2013:
  • Job placement for current and past SBBTI Grads following certification is now available.
  • Monthly Scholarship Raffle in 2013

    Job Placement

Back in the day when I started working as a massage technician, there were not many employment opportunities available. I landed a great job right after graduation with Sheraton Health Spa as well as received referrals from the Double Tree, San Ysidro Ranch, the Biltmore and El Encanto.

I can unequivocally say my days in the Spa setting were a great launching pad for my career. I got to know and touch lots of bodies, build my confidence in the techniques I had learned and develop my stamina.

You'll want to read below the amazing story of Jordan Terry. How he used Spa Employment to up level and launch himself ... three and a half years later, he runs his own thriving massage practice and is SBBTI's Spa Deep Tissue Instructor.

Scholarships

I Remember the days when I was working for minimum wage at "Follow Your Heart" health food store while attending massage school. I'm delighted to offer the SBBTI Scholarship Program to those in need.

Massage Envy has graciously offered to partner with SBBTI in offering scholarships for students in financial need. We will be offering a monthly scholarship raffle, funded by local employers such as Massage Envy. Criteria to participate in the raffle will be forthcoming on our website. Please call us if you are interested.

Each month SBBTI's newsletter will feature stories of how grads and faculty have used the Spa Industry to help guide their road to success.

Jordan Terry Story:

"From my perspective, Massage Envy provided me with the oppurtunity to continue studying masage therapy while receiveing a pay check, as well as, working knowledge and experience.  In a sense, it was like a paid internship.  I began working there as soon as I was licensed, and continued taking courses towards the 550 program at SBBTI.  This enabled me to learn, grow, and gain the knowledge that can only come from experience.

While working at Massage Envy, one has the opportunity to develop wonderful relationships with clients, staff and other therapists.  Developing these relationships can lead to a full schedule for every workday.  The booking of sessions, making reminder phone calls, charging cancellation fees, providing the space and equipment is all done for you at Massage Envy.  This enables the therapist to continue focusing on studies, and could even be counted as part of the payment - becuase you don't have to do it.

Students who finish the 250 program can start working at Massage Envy right away, continue their 550 program, and practice what they learn in the classroom immediately with the added bonus of geting paid to do it. My experience was that as long as my clients were in agreement, I could implement any form of massage. The ability to take a new modality learned in class and implement the new moves I just learned the next day was fantastic - creating neural pathways from book-knowledge to kinesthetic-knowledge immediately, priceless.

A year and a half ago, I stepped out of the spa world into Orthopeodic massage at the Deep Tissue Massage Center, www.dtmcsb.com. There I work with people to educate and facilitate change in people's bodies.  In my work, clients set goals towards what they wish to experience in their body, such as pain free life, or increased range of motion.

Last fall, I stepped back into the classroom at SBBTI as Spa Deep Tissue Instructor. I advise students to maintain a perspective on their long term goals, while working at Massage Envy- ie to work on 1000- 2000 bodies, then reevaluate where you want to be. That is what my wife Aeon and I did, and after two years at Massage Envy, we set out working for ourselves and our own practice. Now we are self-sustaining,  and autonomous while still growing personally and professionally."

"My approach to Spa Deep Tissue is to offer a Kata, or framework, that addresses the tension patterns experienced by the majority of in this modern era. Once learned, students can craft the kata as their own implementing their personal touch and style. The course defines what Spa Deep Tissue means to both clients and therapists, and hones the students' capacity to offer a full body session in our hour. As instructor I seek to create classroom setting where we all are teachers and students collectively giving and sharing."
