ON EXHIBIT : No Boundaries and The Watcher/The Watched

No Boundaries (main gallery)
The Pittsburgh Group's No Boundaries features the artwork of thirteen prominent members of the Pittsburgh art community: Dorothy Forman, Adrienne Heinrich, Lorraine Levy, Elaine Morris, Judith Musser, Ellen Chisdes Neuberg, Debra Platt, Susan Pollins, Aline Shader, Phiris Kathryn Sickels, Lucienne Wald, Jill Whittaker, and Kathleen Zimbicki. The Pittsburgh Group's monthly gatherings began thirty-eight years ago as a result of a class taught by the late Jerry Caplan at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Members of The Pittsburgh Group possess their own distinct visual vocabulary, while valuing the personal connections that have come about through the years. Through this sharing of constructive advice, they clarify and elaborate upon, individual visualizations in a way which is not possible when working in isolation. View the Artwork!

The Watcher / The Watched (2nd floor gallery)
The Watcher / The Watched explores not only the use of media but also the ability of the art object to examine the intent of the watcher and the experience of the watched. Kyle Ethan Fischer's use of non-traditional materials, such as bones and dollies, is a response to the static act of viewing and an exploration into his artwork's ability to challenge the power dynamics of the watcher and the watched. Multi-media artist Irina Koukhanova uses mythological figures of folklore to comment on, and explore the spirit of upheaval, in contemporary society. Drawing upon the archetype of the Pied Piper, Koukhanova's bronze, wood, and ceramic installation Rattenfanger serves as a vehicle to reveal the dynamics of entrapment. Carolyn Reed Barritt's sculptural "excerpts" reflect upon inhabitation and movement within an environment. Using wood, sticks, acrylic ink, and gesso, Barritt's process is not only deliberate but also emergent as she contrasts a watcher and watched relationship based on principles of trust with a relationship based on principles of domination. Danny Licul's tightly framed scenes of children with sock puppets depict the unmasking of personality. To facilitate this study, Licul built a scale model of the grammar school he attended and populated it with clay figures and furniture. He uses it like a movie set to construct his paintings from behind a lens: He is both the watcher and the watched. Working with a variety of historical ephemera, Sherry Rusinack's artwork addresses the multi-dimensional constructs of individual and social privacy. Her artwork demonstrates how principles of privacy are dependent upon who is in a vulnerable position (the watched) and who is not (the watcher).

No Boundaries and The Watcher/The Watched are on exhibit until January 8th!
THE FRIDGE : Team BoxHeart Takes Miami

BoxHeart in The Fridge, Miami Beach
BoxHeart recently returned from exhibition in The Fridge Art Fair during Miami Art Week, December 1-6, 2015. Fridge Art Fair's philosophy is to make the art fair scene accessible to diverse exhibitors and visitors alike. Fridge Art Fair celebrates creative freedom and diversity, encouraging exhibitors to explore all possibilities within their spaces as, in the words of Fridge Curator Linda DiGusta, "exploration, energetic participation and enthusiastic support create transformative energy." Exhibitors are drawn from the world art community and include dealers, collectives, and unrepresented artists - many "regulars", and some new to the Fridge! BoxHeart was proud to be among exhibitors like Art Shape Mammoth (also exhibiting in X Contemporary), Peter Cusack, and Erin Ko (currently exhibiting at The Gallery 4).

Here's to our fabulous artists Kyle Ethan Fischer, Irina Koukhanova, and Daria Sandburg for joining us in Miami, doing the work - having such fun - and creating a scene! Sandburg's "Baggage Claim Project" made quite the splash on gallerists and curators at Art Basel and Art Miami! Sales in The Fridge included mixed media works by Sherry Rusinack and works on paper by Kyle Ethan Fischer and Daria Sandburg.

UP NEXT : The 15th Annual Art Inter/National Exhibition

2016 Art Inter/National
Inspired by the prestigious Carnegie International, our Art Inter/National Exhibition began in 2002 by exploring how our world impacts the artistic process. Over the past 14 years, the exhibition has featured artists from over fifty countries (Angola, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, China, Columbia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, India, Iran, and Myanmar - just to name of few). Despite our differences in place, the exhibition continually showcased how our world is delicately interconnected.

We received hundreds of entries for consideration this year, selecting 25 works of art for the exhibition. Now in its 15th and final year, the tradition of this exhibition comes full circle in celebration of how each of the selected artists influence our world with their artwork. Sharing the common goal of communicating commonality with the viewer, we're thrilled to present 22 powerful visual storytellers that are changing our world with imaginative imagery of wisdom, beauty, and truth, in differentiated voices that flicker and flare against the noise.
