ON EXHIBIT : Stumpf & Sandburg

Didymous (The Twins), Mixed Media on Canvas
"For her exhibit Between Worlds, Brenda Stumpf has created paintings, sculptures, charcoal sketches, ink drawings and elaborately dimensional works combining layers of acrylic, gesso, wire, leaves, flowers, fabric and lace. But although the media that she employs swings from one end of the pendulum to the other, the ideas she communicates at BoxHeart Gallery are strongly consistent. Particularly prevalent is the theme of ends leading to beginnings, growth emerging from decay and, ultimately, life following death."

 - Lissa Brennan, The Pittsburgh City Paper, 9/30/15

This is Not a Life Vest
Installation

"Recently I got a press release from Daria Sandburg for her upcoming exhibition at BoxHeart Gallery. Sandburg is behind the Baggage Claim Project, which she describes as "An artistic community experience of sharing stories, burning up the drek, letting go & using hope to fuel new possibilities... floward." I had no idea what that meant, but the press release indicated that it involves a vintage suitcase, which seems cool. Then I spoke to the artist. The conversation changed everything. After hearing Sandburg speak about this work, I can say with confidence that I deeply understand it and equally that I'll never be able to really explain it."

The Watcher / The Watched
The Watcher / The Watched explores not only the use of media but also the ability of the art object to examine the intent of the watcher and the experience of the watched. Whether contemplating their childhood, creativity, political strife, domesticity, or safety, the artists in this exhibition imbue a feeling that the viewer is too being watched. Introspection and intent cause a tension between the viewer and the artwork in this exhibition. As the viewer's eye allows the brain to absorb visual information, the artwork recasts itself as a mirror in the minutia of reflex. Is the viewer the watcher? Is the viewer being watched? Featuring artwork by Carolyn Reed Barritt, Kyle Ethan Fischer, Irina Koukhanova, Danny Licul, and Sherry Rusinack.
