ON EXHIBIT : Treacy and Studeny

The public reception for Erin Treacy's Dismantled and Reclaimed and Jim Studeny's You Only Live Twice was held on July 18th. It was a steamy evening! "Sometimes abstract, sometimes suggesting natural or man-made objects, Treacy's paintings and paper assemblages explore time and fragmentation, inspired principally by nature. Studeny's paintings, meanwhile, are inspired solely by Japanese woodblock prints from the 16th through 18th centuries, from Kuniyoshi's samurai images to Hokusai's landscapes."
- Bill O'Driscoll, The Pittsburgh City Paper, 7/15/15

The Brush Off
Acrylic and Oil on Panel, 12" X 24"

"The paintings and assemblages in Treacy's exhibit, 26 in all, are whimsical and embrace movement, multiplicity and dense compositions as metaphors for life. This artwork continues Treacy's investigation into how our relationships to time and physical place can be depicted through abstractions of nature, especially how these visuals can serve as "triggers" for our relationships with experiences." - Kurt Shaw, The Tribune Review, 8/13/15

SOLD!
Taira Tomomori on the Rocks
Acrylic on Canvas, 40" X 30"

Jim Studeny's goal is to reintroduce the ancient Japanese woodblock images, with all of their exquisite detail, and translate them into equally exquisite modern style paintings; while honoring and drawing attention to the specific techniques of the original artists. Studeny was born, raised, and is still living in the Bloomfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh. He earned his Associates degree in Specialized Technology Architectural CADD at Pittsburgh Technical Institute and went on to work in the Civil Engineering field for over 25 years. The years he spent producing manual ink drawings perfected his artistic talent by heightening his ability as a detailer.

UP NEXT : Stumpf and Sandburg

Between Worlds
Known for her abstract, intricate, and complex use of non-traditional materials, Brenda Stumpf's artwork is pervaded with mythic and historic figures, sacred texts, and alchemy. Steeped with both intensely personal and archetypal associations, her artwork reveals dichotomous relationships between virility and delicateness, immovability and transformation, past and present, and fundamentally, corporeal and spiritual. In her hands, materials like the paper from steeped tea bags or old torn dresses converge to illustrate the stories of female figures such as Pandora, Seshat, and the Black Madonna. Born in Parma Ohio, Stumpf lived and worked in Denver Colorado for the past seven years. This June, Stumpf moved to Pittsburgh and set up her studio in the former United Methodist Church in Stanton Heights. Stumpf's exhibit, Between Worlds, will include her large-scale artwork, never before exhibited in this part of the country!

The Journal of Repetitive Learning
Daria Sandburg's exhibit, The Journal of Repetitive Learning, delineates the boundaries between art and the everyday. Her chosen objects, like tin cans, fabrics, and worn wood, come together to create contemporary interpretations of wunderkammer-esque environments that narrate the experiences of being human. Born in Rock Island Illinois, Sandburg was the co-founder of Bohemia Gallery in Tucson Arizona where she curated exhibitions while making her own artwork. In 2012, she moved to Pittsburgh for her residency exhibition, In Her Own Words, at Borelli-Edwards Galleries. This summer, Sandburg took to the streets of Pittsburgh with her self-initiated public project, Baggage Claim, an artistic community experience of sharing stories, burning up the drek, letting go, and using hope to fuel new possibilities. The accumulation of her gatherings from the Baggage Claim will be presented in her exhibit The Journal of Repetitive Learning.
