modern+contemporary

There's still time!

Stop by for modern+contemporary, "an exhibit exploring the multiplicity of modern artistic vision through works by five very different visual artists. Jennipher Satterly presents selections from her solo exhibit Luxe, a collection of photo-realistic oil paintings that depict luxury goods ranging from tastefully understated to downright ostentatious. Meanwhile, Mark Loebach offers a retrospective of his pan-American pastel-colored landscapes."
- Dan Willis, Pittsburgh City Paper

modern+contemporary also features artwork by Melissa Kuntz, Cara Livorio, and Daria Sandburg and is on display until July 18th.

 VIRTUAL TOUR
Tomorrow and Tomorrow: THOMAS SWETERLITSCH

Pittsburgh writer Thomas Sweterlitsch celebrates his gritty debut novel Tomorrow and Tomorrow at the WYEP Community Broadcast Center on July 10th!

The novel, set ten years after Pittsburgh was destroyed in a terrible accident, focuses on the secrets of the Archive, a digital recreation of the Steel City pre-destruction, that allows for interaction with lost people and places. Grieving survivor John Dominic Blaxton is obsessed with the Archive, and unintentionally finds glitches in the code that reveals a horrific secret.

"Sweterlisch's debut is a wild mashup of Raymond Chandler, Philip K. Dick and William S. Burroughs, and, like their work, utterly visionary."

- Stewart O'Nan, American novelist

10 Years: JAY KNAPP

Born and raised in Detroit Michigan, artist Jay Knapp attended Wayne State University where he received his BFA in sculpture. Since that time, sculpture, painting, photography, and digital media have all shown up in his oeuvre. Now, for the first time, all of these mediums will be on display in his debut exhibition in Pittsburgh, 10 Years.

The center point of 10 Years will be Knapp's nationally acclaimed wood sculptures which explore the perception of safety and the psychology of anxiety stemming from nuclear weapons in American culture. Alongside these intricate woodcarvings, Knapp will reveal some of his most personal and closely kept abstract paintings as well as his photography disassembled and remixed into digital paintings.

Knapp's controversial social outlook intertwined with his intensely unforgiving inward search for sensuality and beauty brings his artistic process together into full view, and invites the audience into his creative circle. The exhibition will be on display from August 5th through October 3rd.

Save the Date!

Join us on Saturday, August 9th, from 5-8pm

for the artist reception with Jay Knapp! Free and open to the public!
