Artist Irina Koukhanova addresses the space where the solitary struggle and triumph of the individual psyche unravel through a multitude of references escorted by an ironic grin. Panoptic Landscape captures an all-encompassing system viewed from the perspective of a human or an animal, an adult or a child, and alludes to authority, power play, and the dynamics of entrapment. Educated at the Moscow Institute of Art and Industrial Design, the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, and the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, Koukhanova is currently the head of the sculpture program at Cleveland State University. An internationally exhibiting artist, Koukhanova has recently showed her work in Switzerland and Slovakia. She has a number of public and corporate art commissions and her artist residencies include Sculpture Space, New York and the Santa Fe Art Institute, New Mexico, among others. Koukhanova's debut solo exhibition in Pittsburgh, Panoptic Landscape, continues until May 16th. Available Works

BETA: Biophilia Enhanced Through Art
The Center for Sustainable Landscapes (CSL) at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens was designed to be the first project in the world to simultaneously achieve LEED Platinum, SITES four-star certification, and The Living Building Challenge. By employing cutting-edge approaches to low environmental impact technology and sustainable design, the CSL achieved energy and resource efficiency. As the CSL continues to become a "Living Building," the BETA Project was implemented as a way to use art to honor our profoundly deep connections with nature. BETA is a sensory rich collective voice that tells the story about the unfolding of the CSL, and its true spirit. Biophilia: Pittsburgh, Thursday, May 1st, 5:30pm The May 1st Biophilia: Pittsburgh meeting will feature Richard V. Piacentini (Executive Director, Phipps), Sonja Bochart (Interior Designer, SmithGroup JJR.), and Nicole Capozzi (Owner, BoxHeart), who will introduce the new BETA Project in the CSL!
