Inspired by the prestigious Carnegie International, Box Heart's Art Inter/National... here and abroad exhibition began in 2002 by exploring how environment impacts the artistic process and influences what each artist creates. Now in its 13th year, the tradition of this exhibition continues to expand on this concept by exploring the resilient and ephemeral nature of the human experience. Over 600 entries, from regional, national, and international artists, were received for consideration this year. Of these entries, 20 artists were selected for participation and 28 works of art in a variety of media will be exhibited!
In her latest series of the Texas eco region, German-born structural weaver Doerte Weber noticed how she has come to internalize the landscapes which surround her. Weber's Texas Brush Country captures the tall grasses as they sway in the wind, the patches of emptiness punctuating a vast open land, and the sense that the land goes on further than other eyes can see.
While observing the living creatures that surround us, Italian artist Elisa Mearelli realized how much we can learn from them and how their language and shape is internationally universal. Mearelli's creatures present themselves etched onto paper, indelible, but view with a careful look; they are made up of tiny holes on white paper.
American artist Kesley Duncan's artwork seeks to celebrate the perpetual state of transition as defined by our physicality and place. His figurative ceramic sculpture Transplant discusses that moment of hesitation and the sense of vulnerability that often accompanies a change in place. Here, we see a woman guarding a bundle of aspen branches, her tokens of home, as she finds herself naked and exposed in a new place.
Hungarian artist Eszter Bornemisza juxtaposes ancient maps of the city of Budapest with contemporary road, metro, and train layouts. Heavily textured fabrics and various kinds of papers are stitched together creating a rich ground for associations on the alterations of the city.
