The 12th Annual Art Inter/National Exhibition... here and abroad
Juried, Group Exhibition
Box Heart Gallery's Art Inter/National... here and abroad exhibition began in 2002 by exploring how environment impacts the artistic process and influences what each artist creates. Now in its 12th year, the tradition of this exhibition continues to expand on its general concept by exposing the methods artists use to pursue their identity and interpret the invisible realms that reside within their subconscious.
For example, in her reoccurring role as a suited man digitally inserted into a miniature world, American video artist Mary Coyle allows for the re-invention of self through stereotypes. The self is re-invented with the notion that the space one occupies signifies who they are. Issues of identity and gender are brought into question. Coyle explains, "A space can make or break someone; it can define and undefine." Latvian-born Inguna Gremzde's artwork clashes rural countrysides with urban greed and commodity. Her miniature landscapes painted in plastic bottle caps are delicate microcosms; a London sky, a field in France, a meadow in Latvia, that not only offer a close examination of our surrounding world but also reference the shrinking space of untouched nature.
Box Heart received over 550 entries for consideration from artists all over the world. Of these entries, 20 artists working in a variety of medias and artistic styles were selected for participation in this year's exhibition.
