The B.A.A.

When John Hancock established their Boston Marathon sponsorship 29 years ago, the idea of bringing together the most talented elite runners from around the globe to compete with each other on the world's most historic marathon course was set in motion. Since then we have welcomed nearly 700 athletes from 45 countries to compete for the coveted title of Boston Marathon Champion.

Our theme this year is about connectivity, about how We Run Together.... how elite athletes line up to race on the same starting line as qualified and invitational runners, how volunteers share the sidelines with thousands of fans, and how race and city officials stand side-by-side with support teams. We all bring out the best in each other, and that's how we all get to the finish line.

Elite Perspective

"Our sport unifies, no matter what our pace, no matter how we race, from the front of the pack to those at the back, we all experience the excitement, the pain, and ultimately the joy of the race - in this way we always run together, this year in Boston it will mean even more." - Desiree Davila Linden, USA

"The Marathon distance is very difficult to cover and without the support of all of the fans and people cheering us on and the other runners, we would have a very difficult time to run the full race. So we work together to make a marathon happen." - Tilahun Regassa, Ethiopia

"There is a unique energy surrounding the Boston Marathon that you can't help but feel. It includes every runner and every person along the course. It brings every person there together as one." - Amy Hastings, USA

"As runners we all have the same challenges and share the same experience, with the goal to accomplish something and better ourselves." - Wilson Chebet, Kenya

"Being a runner, professional or recreational, means that you are part of a community that stretches across the globe." - Lanni Marchant, Canada

"Every runner has a specific motivation and inspiration for running a marathon. This year, all 36,000 of us will 'run together' to demonstrate the spirit of the marathon. We will still have our individual motivations, but we will be unified under the Boston Strong umbrella." - Meb Keflezighi, USA
