Wade House Stagecoach Hotel
You might think there are a lot of hotels along the highways now, but in the 1850s the Wade House was one of at least 30 hotels located along the 40 mile-long plank road between Sheboygan and     Fond du Lac. That's almost one for every mile. The photo above, taken of the Wade House around 1860, is the oldest known photograph of the building.

Today you might go 300 miles on one tank of fuel, but how far could a team of horses take your stagecoach? A team of horses could take you about 10 miles. A typical trip on the 40 mile road between Sheboygan and Fond du Lac took ten hours and three changes of horses. Today, a car ride between the two cities takes a little more than 45 minutes.
