A desiccated black cat named Anubis was stolen from the Wisconsin Historical Society in 1897. The state museum was once housed in the Capitol building where Anubis resided. Whisked out of the Capitol at night in a paper bag by Milwaukee newspapermen, he reappeared a week later in a cat show in Milwaukee. The museum made no note of the mysterious disappearance of state property.

Plans included Anubis' eventual return to the museum, but the Milwaukee Press Club liked him so much he is now their mascot and included in their logo. To learn more about Anubis, read the Club's first-hand account of the cat's journey into history.
