Wisconsin Historic Sites & Museums Newsletter
Early June, 2013

Greetings!

And we thought last month was busy!  The first two weeks of June have all our sites and museums jam-packed with FUN.  But families looking for added value, can really jump for joy in June!

On Sunday, June 2, four of the Wisconsin Historical Society's historic sites and museums will offer deeply discounted admission rates on that date only, and nearby state parks are also offering free admission.  The participating historic sites and museums are: Madeline Island Museum in La Pointe; Pendarvis in Mineral Point; Stonefield in Cassville; and Villa Louis in Prairie du Chien. Free state park admission on the same day creates a great opportunity for mixing and matching state park and historic site destinations for a family friendly Wisconsin outing.

The H.H. Bennett Studio in Wisconsin Dells is celebrating its 13th Anniversary by offering free admission the following weekend on Saturday, June 8 only.  Opening Day at First Capitol is June 12 and admission is always free.

And now onto more, more, and more fun!

New Wade House Visitor Center and Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum

Grand Opening

Historic Wagons in the new Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum
Historic wagons in the new Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum

The public opening of the new Wade House Visitor Center and Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum will take place on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9, just a few days after the 60-year anniversary of the historic site's original dedication in 1953. Over the weekend, visitors will have the opportunity to tour the new facility including the orientation exhibits, which highlight the historic core of the Wade House property and its role in early transportation networks and the development of Greenbush.

A centerpiece of the new facility is the new 20,000 square foot Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum, which helps to bring the world of horse-drawn transportation to life with displays of authentic horse-drawn vehicles immersed in vignettes which help to tell the story of each vehicle's purpose.

Visitors to the site will also have a chance to travel by horse-drawn omnibus or wagon through the woods and over the Mullet River, seemingly back in time to the historic area of the site for visits to the 1850 stagecoach hotel, blacksmith shop and water-powered sawmill.

Special grand opening activities will include talks about the new facility, including its construction, Wade House Logogreen building initiatives, and site enhancements connecting the new facility to the historic core of the site.

In addition, on Saturday, June 8, in celebration of National Dairy Month, guests will have the opportunity to help make ice cream and butter in 1860s fashion as well as learn about the cheese making process at 1860s Dairy Day.

Great River Road Festival

Come celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Great River Road National Scenic Byway at the Great River Road Festival at Stonefield Historic Site in Cassville.  Activities include wagon rides, blacksmithing and log cutting demonstrations, talks about the natural history along the river, a catfish dinner, and river music provided by La Barge and also Jon Stravers.

In 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Great River Road National Scenic Byway along the Mississippi, following the river for nearly 3,000 miles through 10 states.  The GreStonefield Logoat River Road Festival will be dedicated to the memory of Raymond J. "Penny" Eckstein, long-time Cassville Village President.  Penny was instrumental in purchasing the land that eventually became Nelson Dewey State Park and Stonefield Historic Site.  He served as a pilot on the Mississippi River Parkway Commission from 1938 until 1974, when he was elected Pilot Emeritus.

Come see for yourself why the Great River Road in Wisconsin was voted the "Prettiest Drive" in America by the readers of the Huffington Post!

Circus World's Performance Season Has Begun!

"Come to the circus and laugh your cares away" is the opening line of the "The Greatest Show On   Earth". So it's no wonder that Circus World is putting the emphasis on FUN this summer." The 2013 Big Top fun begins with Vlastek and Kim Valla-Bertini. Vlastek performs a series of wild and crazy stunts on the tramploine. And then Kim and Vlasktek return in an acrobatic unicyle act.

Amazing Animal Acts

Susan Sheryll's Afghan Champions along with David Zoppe and his hilarious monkeys are set to bring loads of laughter to guests this summer. The afghan hound is an unusal breed, beautiful to watch, intelligent and independent. Susan's act demonstrates the Afghan's natural ability to jump high and for long distances.

Illusions and Laughter

Tristan Crist returns with a terrific new show 7 days a week throughout the summer. Pushing the boundaries of traditional magic, Tristan produces a large-scale magic, comedy and illusion show which is perfect for the whole family.

Neal Skoy returns as everyone's favorite clown Roger. His bumbling shenanigans always create big smiles and even bigger laughs. Neal is a veteran of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

And That's Not All

Circus World's performance season began May18 and runs daily through September 2 with magician and illusionist Tristan Crist and his new show. Rounding out a fun-filled day are the Guided Circus Wagon Tour, the Novelty Instruments Concert, the Kids' World Interactive Circus and Circus Skills Adventure.

Enjoy a full day of family fun, history and entertainment at Wisconsin's most exciting attraction.Circus World Logo  "We have jaw-dropping thrills, side-splitting hilarity, and incredible history to offer our guests this season," said Performance Director Dave SaLoutos.
