13th Annual Jefferson Cup Invitational Results

The 13th annual Jefferson Cup Invitational in Kansas City, Mo., is the only competition that honors the best of the best among wineries from all of America's wine regions. Each year, wines are selected from across America; this year, 23 states were represented at the competition.

The two-day competition wrapped up on November 18 with the awarding of 29 Jefferson Cup Awards to wineries in 12 different states: California, Colorado, Arizona, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio, Missouri, Kansas, New York, South Dakota, Virginia and Washington State each. Awards went to wines made from both vinifera and non-vinifera vines. The 29 Jefferson Cups were awarded to eight white wines, 16 red wines, one sparkling and four dessert wines.

"While many competitions insist upon selecting a pre-ordained number of sweepstakes winners, our judges are allowed to find the top wines, whether there are only one, two or three, or even no winners in some categories, as has happened in previous years," says Jefferson Cup Invitational founder Doug Frost. Frost is one of only three individuals in the world to have achieved the titles of Master Sommelier and Master of Wine.

The Jefferson Cup is partially supported by the Missouri Wine and Grape Board.

with Erv Langan of Keltoi Vineyard

This installment of the Winemaker Connection features Erv Langan, winemaker for Keltoi Vineyard in Oronogo, Mo.

Erv - Keltoi winemaker interview

How long have you been making wine?
"I started making wine at a very early age, later switched to beer and then in my early thirties started making wine again."

How and where did you learn to make wine?

"[I] Started out with kits. My last assignment in Germany was in the Rhine winemaking region that really got me back into it. I started making more and different types of wine. I bought some land to plant grapes and it just got to what it is today."

What did you do before becoming a winemaker?

"Retired from the Army and then retired from Missouri State University."

Describe yourself in three words.

"Persistent and Determined. (When I was younger.)"

What is your favorite wine to make?

"Norton."

What is the toughest challenge about winemaking in Missouri?

"The weather."

Is winemaking an art or a science? Or both?

"I think it's both. Sometimes it looks good in the lab, but it doesn't have the 'umph' it needs."

If you didn't make wine, what would you do?

"Live on a beach in either Florida or Mexico."
