WELCOME TO RUTIZ FARMS

HAPPENINGS ON FARM:

The "Little Red Hen" Bakery ( Kirsten ) will now be bringing her breads to our stand every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.  Her breads are made from scratch everyday and baked right here in Arroyo
Grande in her own wood fired brick oven.
Kirsten should be around this Friday to give out samples and answer your questions about her breads.

Our sweet corn season is over...something to look forward to again next summer.

Winter squashes are now ready...a winter squash is any squash that has a hard skin that enables the squash to last several months after harvest.  We have Kabocha, spaghetti, delicata, acorn, butternut and red kuri squashes.  In addition, we also have Sugar Pie pumpkins  (good for making pumpkin pies), and the mini "baby bear" pumpkin, along with the regular Halloween Jack-o-lantern pumpkins.

The pumpkins are ready to find their new homes...if you "engraved" a pumpkin last month, they are now ready for you to go out into the field and retrieve them.   There are also plenty of other pumpkins ( without writing on them ) if you want to take one home.  You can bring the family out to our pumpkin field and choose one right out of the field.  The pumpkins are priced at 50c/ pound ( most pumpkins will cost between $3 to $5 each ).  Any pumpkin you choose should easily last till Thanksgiving time or longer.

Blackberry u-pick this Thursday and Friday ( and Saturday if supplies last).  Come early for best picking.  The price will be  $4/ pound for the blackberry

Red Anjou pears from Vintage Organic Farm in SLO.  They are super sweet and very juicy...ready to eat now...so if you want to wait to eat them, put the pears in the refrigerator when you get home.
.  The Italian Romano beans are a true green bean, flat in appearance ( as opposed to the Blue Lake variety which is round ).  The Romano bean has a richer flavor than the Blue Lake, but requires slightly more cooking time to make it tender. Use them in a steamed green bean dish or add them to a stir fry or saute...they are also delicious in soups and stews.

Spaghetti Squash Recipe
Ingredients:
  • 1 spaghetti squash, halved lengthwise and seeded
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped tomatoes
  • 3/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 3 tablespoons sliced black olives
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. Place spaghetti squash cut sides down on the prepared baking sheet, and bake 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a sharp knife can be inserted with only a little resistance. Remove squash from oven, and set aside to cool enough to be easily handled.
  3. Meanwhile, heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Saute onion in oil until tender. Add garlic, and saute for 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in the tomatoes, and cook only until tomatoes are warm.
  4. Use a large spoon to scoop the stringy pulp from the squash, and place in a medium bowl. Toss with the sauteed vegetables, feta cheese, olives, and basil. Serve warm.
