WELCOME TO RUTIZ FARMS

LOCALLY RAISED BEEF FOR SALE AT OUR STAND
This Friday we welcome Heather Teixeira to our stand with her packaged beef cuts.  Come by and meet her and talk about her families' beef and pick up a package or two to try out.

Tucked away in the foothills of the Central Coast of Pismo Beach, California, is the home of Teixeira Cattle Company.  Since the early 1990's, the family has been devotedly raising hormone and antibiotic free Angus beef.  Our vegetarian fed, pasture-raised beef, are nurtured and raised on carefully managed high quality pasture and forage.  Our family commitment to our cattle and to you, our customers, is our greatest asset - providing healthful, flavorful, juicy and tender beef "from our pasture to your plate!"

We will have pre-packaged bundles or you can select what you want!  Our ground beef comes in 1 lb. or 2 lb. packs!

TOMATO U-PICK
We will have our tomato field open for you-pick this coming Thursday, Friday and Saturday during stand hours.  The cost will be $1.50/ pound when you pick them yourself ( the already picked tomatoes at our stand cost $3/ pound).  These are our "Fourth of July" variety, a smaller size tomato,  sweet flavor, and meaty...great for sauces or freezing.

PUMPKIN ENGRAVING
This Thursday, Friday and Saturday...we will have our pumpkin field open for "engraving".  Be sure to not miss this short window of opportunity to make your own custom pumpkin. Write your name on a pumpkin still growing on the vine in the field and then come back in October to find your pumpkin when it is finished growing.

HARVEST BOXES DELIVERED  FOR THE SLO CITY AREA
After much discussion and thoughts with my staff, we have decided not to offer the Harvest Box delivery ( for at least this fall ) to the San Luis Obispo city area.  We feel that our energies can be better directed toward improving direct sales from our farm stand ( we have opened the stand an additional day...Thursdays ) and working toward activities that will involve more of our local community.  We greatly appreciate everyone's support and time put in through these past seasons...and hope that your families have enjoyed eating the produce from our farm.
You can still get our veggies and fruits for your families...we just need to figure a way for you to make it down to our farm stand in Arroyo Grande.  Here's an idea...how about getting a network going of families that live in the SLO area, who want to continue to get our produce, to form a carpool, and you could take turns coming to the farm stand each Friday to pick up boxes for other families.  If any of you are interested in such a network, please send me your name and email address, and I will compile a list and send it out to all interested parties. Then you can make arrangements among yourselves.
Otherwise, our stand will continue to be open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, noon to 6pm and Saturdays, 10am to 4pm.  We hope that you will find time to come visit us and see the farm.  Our original visions for the farm business was that families would be coming to the farm and seeing and experiencing the place from which their food comes from.  By us delivering the packed boxes of produce to another location, I feel that we have lost some of that valuable connection .

WHAT'S  IN YOUR HARVEST BOX THIS WEEK:

This week's eggplant can be grilled  or simply cut into 1 inch size cubes and added to a veggie saute together with onions, green beans, garlic and salt and pepper.  The eggplant really doesn't have much flavor by itself, but it will take on the flavors of the other veggies mixed with it.

Leeks are added to the Harvest Box this Friday.  One of the biggest issues with them is actually cleaning them as they do collect a good amount of our lovely sand. I use my salad spinner but you can also soak in a big bowl of water, I cut off most of the tops and start pulling back some of the "leaves" to see how much soil is still in the leek.  If I'm cutting them up to put in stir fry or some other recipe I will cut them up and have them floating in the water, then drain, rinsing a couple of times.  If I want them whole, say for "Leeks Vinaigrette" I will pull back a little bit on the top and flush out sand under running water. My "Leeks Vinaigrette" recipe is pretty easy: Steam on stove top or in microwave, drain, pour a good vinaigrette dressing (to taste) over tender leeks.  Not much to it, just sounds special and tastes delicious!  You can also grill Leeks in heavy duty aluminum foil with some olive oil and seasoning while you are grilling your other dinner ingredients.

How about a nice fresh kale salad using the bunch of Tuscano kale in your box this week.  First, gently massage the leaves with your hands for a minute to make them a bit more tender.  Then cut up the leaves into thin "ribbons" discarding the thicker portion of the stem. Mix in a bowl with some vinaigrette dressing and chopped nuts and fruits and finish with some Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top..delicious and good for you!  Or how about some "kale chips"...wash and separate the leafy part from the stem ( discard the thicker stems ), cut up the leaves into smaller portions, add a little olive oil and seasonings, put on a roasting pan and roast in a hot oven until the leaves are crispy.
The bi-color sweet corn tastes great...and there is the problem!  The worms love it too...so from here on out, we will be cutting off the tip of each ear before we put them in the boxes.  Hopefully, this will spare you from having to open your ear of corn and finding this extra "protein."

Our own "4th of July" tomatoes are small but tasty!  A great size to use the whole tomato sliced up to make a sandwich..(so you don't have to figure out what to do with the other half )
