The book is about why some organizations fall apart in the face of disruption, while others flourish. Resilient organizations do not rely on any single plan for the future, but are agile and responsive: they thrive, rather than merely survive, amidst change. He was named one of five "Innovators to Watch in 2013" by the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
Early Bird pricing ends next week on March 31st. WN Members and organizations bringing more than one person get a discount. Full Conference registration starts at $150. Information here (The Nonprofit Network SWWA Conference is November 4th - we hope to see you at both events!)

_________________________________________________Strategies to Increase Nonprofit Donor Retention Rates
From frogloop
While all nonprofits recognize the value of cultivating donors over the long-term, they feel an incredible amount of pressure to implement short-term strategies that will raise money today. Unfortunately, many nonprofits don't feel like they have the luxury of focusing on fundraising strategies that will bring in long-term results, which has led to low donor retention rates. According to the Fundraising Effectiveness Project, the commercial business customer retention rate is 94%. Guess what the nonprofit donor retention rate is? 49%. That is an attrition rate of 59%.
What to do about it?

Is Charity Broken?
Four people sent me the link to activist and fundraiser Dan Pallotta, speaking at TED Talks within the space of a single day - so I am passing it on. - jk Pallotta is the author of Uncharitable (and other books) - we've linked to him several times for his posting in the Harvard Business Review blog http://blogs.hbr.org/pallotta/ Take 20 minutes to listen to Dan at TED Talks. He "calls out the double standard that drives our broken relationship to charities. Too many nonprofits, he says, are rewarded for how little they spend -- not for what they get done. Instead of equating frugality with morality, he asks us to start rewarding charities for their big goals and big accomplishments (even if that comes with big expenses)." TED Talks___________________________________________ Social Venture Partners Portland Encore Fellows Program The Encore Fellows program matches retired professionals interested in community service with nonprofit agencies for a typically 1-year part time (1,000 hour) assignment. Unlike customary volunteer work, these assignments are not direct service work but rather focus on nonprofit agency capacity-building using the skills of the professional retiree (Fellow) in areas including strategy, technology, marketing, human resources, finance, operations, project management, process improvement, etc. The $25,000 cost of the fellowship includes a paid stipend paid to the Fellow; this cost may be partially subsidized by corporate or philanthropic grants. As an agency you gain from a significant infusion of talent in an area of strategic or operational value to your organization's development at substantially lower costs than the open market. In addition, based on our track record to date, you cultivate a source of new talent to support your mission. Go to the Encore Fellows program website for further information or contact program director Stephen Ristau at Stephen@svpportland.org.
