CWA AWARDED $750K FOR SOCAL WILDLIFE AREA
The Wildlife Conservation Board approved a $750,000 grant to California Waterfowl last month for the second-phase restoration efforts at the Imperial Wildlife Area's Wister Unit near Niland, California.

Phase II will complete a significant habitat expansion effort that began in 2014. The project will restore an additional 150 acres of waterfowl habitat in the 413 east unit, which was part of what used to be a fish farm. Construction will include new levees, swales, islands, loafing bars and water control structures and will begin in March 2016.

CWA's work on the Field 413 unit began in 2014 with a $1 million Wildlife Conservation Board grant that funded a 350-acre restoration on the Wister Unit. Restoration efforts were also funded with California Duck Stamp Program funds.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and California Waterfowl staff have worked in partnership in the Imperial Wildlife Area since 2008. Over the last seven years, the North American Wetlands Conservation Act and the California Duck Stamp Program have invested nearly $1.6 million in restoration and enhancement of over 2,600 acres within the Wister Unit. In addition, the Wildlife Conservation Board has invested $1.4 million in the Wister Unit. All of these efforts have increased the overall habitat quality through infrastructure development and upgrades that the partners hope will eventually include all of the Imperial Wildlife Area.
